problem with output gear on the evo gearsets

The gear that outputs all of the power to the crown wheel of the diff is slightly different on the evo one, it has 17 teeth and is slightly smaller as you can see, while ours has 18 teeth. Obviously having 17 instead of 18 is a problem anyway because that will screw up the gearing anyway, but just as important, the output gear won't match up with the crown wheel properly.

We tried to get the bearing off at the end of the shaft, but it's a bit difficult, so it's back down to ralliart tomorrow to ask them how to do it

So close, yet so far. The good news as Mpau said in the other thread was that the gearset went in just fine, all of the gears could be selected, etc etc.

That's the one side of the final drive, I think. That and the large gear bolted to the diff are the ones to change to alter your final drive ratio. It must be changeable, as the evo boxes have different final drive options. Good luck, let us know how you do!

Yes but the problem with that Nick is that if we change the diff gear then we will have a 4.529 final drive, which is the complete opposite of what we're trying to do.

HI, SO what you need is the large gear wheel for an EVO but a different ratio that will match your 17 teeth.

Try this link, I have used them before, and they have a good range, keep going you'll get there!, cheers Louis

The VR4 output gear is the bigger one with 18 teeth, the evo set has the gear ratios we wanted, and fits in the box, but the output is different and doesn't quite match the VR4 crown gear properly, you could swap the diff gear from an evo to match as you say, but as brad said this alters the ratios back again, and kind of defeats the purpose of trying to get a longer 1,2 and 5th.

Really we want the evo gears attached to the VR4 output and diff gear so that it doesnt change anything in the 4wd, just the gearing they want.

HI, Ahh, sorry, wasn't paying full attention and I thought those guys may have an alternative crown wheel and drive gear that you could use.
I would like to think that the bearing in the photo is a press fit, and that someone with a bearing puller and a press would be able to remove the bearing so that you can swap the gears and then press the bearing back on, (or do you reckon the gear is part of the shaft?), good luck.

That was actually the plan for today, we took it to Kenneths family's engineering shop, and tried it with a hydraulic puller with quite a bit of force, and no luck..

I think it will come off if you put it in the press, but its not my gear set to ruin in case it doesnt So i think brads going to see if ralliart can do it for him, in case theres some trick to it.

Its interesting there are so many evo sets available though, Brad could probably work out an ideal combination for drag racing or track use and so on

    Cool!.
Yes there is a good selection there which can be interchanged!, They are dog gears, no syncro etc, but will stand much more abuse, hope all goes well, very interesting stuff.

Louis, looking at all of those final drive ratios, only one comes close, the 4.133, but even then, you're looking at a lot of money to solve something that might be fixed just by popping off the final drive gear on the gearset.

I hope that ralliart will be able to get the gear off for me on monday

It's me who has an uprate output shaft, see my vbgarage for why, but it's not in the car at the moment. It will be in the car when I change to manual. Brad, I know you need to keep the VR4 final drive, my post was to wish you good luck in achieving that, plus try and help people who understand the boxes even less than me! It obviously didn't work.....

    So, anyway, good luck!!

Nick, what would be handy would be finding a 19 tooth final gear. I've re-read your post and now I know what you're saying, I just hope I can get the 18 tooth one onto the evo set.

It should be easy enough to do if you have the correct tools... which we didn't have. Stan has a lot of tools, but he really isn't setup for specific gearbox disassembly... lol

Yeah - that's the issue. If you can get the VR4 final drive working with the GSR's gears, then you may have close to what I would like. But the simple way of doing it would be to have 19 (or 20?) teeth on that gear, with one less on the bigger one. Job done! Hopefully you get to the same place without the expense, though.

Went down to Ralliart today late in the afternoon, it's possible to get it done, basically we need to remove a clip, and pull off every gear, then reassemble the gearset onto the output shaft.

Going to try it today. I've been very busy at work this week. Basically it's not just one gear, it's the entire shaft that needs to come out, so it is quite a bit of work.
