    Camshaft info (stock and upgrades)

Now that I've finished a few things around the house (to silence the wife) I can now get back to the car! That said, I had the stock cams profiled to see if any improvements can be done with a regrind..

The specs for the OEM cams:
    Advertised duration 212/221
    duration@.050" -165/168
    lift -.200" /.205"

Advertised duration 256/256 (regrind process would range from 700 to 950)
    duration@.050" -181/181
    lift -.226"/.226"

These figures have been provided courtesy of http://www.briancrower.com/ This cam is a mild upgrade, better then a standard stage one but not as aggressive as stage 2

Not quite as aggressive as 272 cams from a vendor like Rpw BUT the inflated price of USD 1995.00 makes this solution unexceptable... Personally I would pay Webcams to do a hardweld.

*Note* supporting mods will be done, valves, valve springs, retainers etc..

    Interesting info!

Are they fitted yet? I'd be interested to hear how the idle and power are affected.

i have RPW 272s they are great! rough idle but not rought enough to cause probs changes the whole power band tho and when they come into there own (6000rpm) the turbos cant keep up boost drops off really need bigger turbos to reap the rewards. i had same cams in my FTO and they worked well in that too

Nick: No they are fitted, I am waiting on pricing for the Cams, valves, valve springs, retainers..locks, ARP headstuds..etc etc. It should be any day now. I believe the vavles and springs matched another car sold in the US so those can come off the shelf.

The air flow through the 6a13 heads didnt require much porting, put it this way Pnp on both heads came up to 364 usd.. two hours total. Did not get flowtesting it was said to be pointless by the guy doing the work..

Hbkuk: I agree with you totally 272 cams are excellent, every vehicle I've driven with them seems to come alive BUT I cant justify paying RPW for something that costs twice as much as it should. Do you have dyno #'s before and after the install of the 272's?

I don't know in the vr4 but they made 16bhp in my fto they were fitted to before that so I would think a touch more in the vr4 there a nice rough idle and have moved the band up the rev range...... To be honest it feels like the turbos can't feed the cams enough at high revs though, and I'm not sure if everyone knows fto gr cams fit into a vr4 and vice versa when I swaped over I put cams from vr4 onto my fto, which is another point would oem fto cams make vr4s better? Anyone tryed?

At this point I have titanium valve springs and retainers from the 3000GT/GTO (from 3sx.com), Custom Ferrera Vavles (kept all documentation) 1mm over on intake and exhaust. Waiting for the best solution to 264/272 cams then that install will take place. dyno.. then compare vs the before.

hbkuk1: you have the fto cams in your 6a13? if so why? the fto heads are mivec equipped right? Did you dyno before and after to see if there were any gains? I've thought about using the mivec heads from the fto 6a12 for years but decided not to based on the success I've had with the gt35R setup I currently have. Mivec might end up doing what Vtec does at hi rpms ie burning oil. oil starvation scares the hell out of me..personally

The gpx is mivec the gr is not both are 6a12 I'm not sure the mivec would work tbh I mean non mivec, I put the cams from my fto in the vr4 because they are rpw 272 cams
