    Concensus of opinion?

    Ok,

For those of you who are interested in forged internals what is the general concensus on engine displacement that we are aiming for? Do you want stoker cranks or standard? Forged or billet? Max RPM and horsepower?

Pistons dished or flat? If dished, size of dish?

Rods. "I" beam or "H" beam? Forged or billet?

If I speak to my contacts they will want answers to all of these questions. As these will be somewhat expensive it will be more cost effective to get them made as a batch so we need to thrash out a compromise with regard to individual requirements.

Personally I would be looking at getting to somewhere nearer 3 litres with a combination of bore and stroke to keep the engine oversquare.

A 3ltr bore/stroker would be nice that can rev upto 9k. The similar engined FTO can handle 9k so that shouldn`t be too much hastle.

That would give us somewhere in the region of 12-15% power increase. So on a modified engine thats already kicking out 340bhp you would be looking at 390

Having said that I would be interested in how much we can get just from a stoker kit as its a lot less work than sending the block off to be bored.

If you are taking the crank out you may as well get it bored! Also you can do all sorts of magical stuff like lower the compression so you can run stupid boost.............you have to get out of thnking 10% bigger - 10% more power. After all, there are 1.5 litre engines that produce well over 1000BHP!

Not that I have a desire to have an billet, all-steel Hordak, but I am following this area with interest. I was going to suggest 'H' beam rods, as I have read that they aren't as likely to twist under major stress because of the strenghening ribs. Apparently though, H-beams buckle under compression more easily than I-Beams....Bleh, it seems, having had a quick google, that the debate rages...

    Ok,

I dropped the crank and rod over to Farndon today and asked them to quote for a stroked crank and a fully machined rod.

I won't say what his rough idea of price was I'll just wait for the quote. Suffice to say that it will sort those who are serious about forged items from those that are dreamers or skint!!!

However Steve did say that the crankshaft looked pretty strong anyway and you would probably only need rods to strengthen the internals enough to take serious horsepower.

Had a good look round whilst I was there. There is something about the atmosphere in a machine shop. The smell of the suds, the big machines and all those shiny cranks piled everywhere. I came away with the raging horn. PHWOAR!!!!!

Thanks for the reminder. I had forgotten all about it.

The crankshaft would be £2500 for a 1 off or £2200ea for 5 off. However he has said that after examining the standard crank it looks very strong and would probably be ok for serious horsepower.

The rods would be 'H' beam, fully machined from a billet and would cost £160ea for 1 set or £125ea for 5 sets.

Umm. I think I'll have 2 cranks and keep one as a spare. Anyone else?

i was talking to one of our customers the other day who builds the works honda touring car engines (and used to do the tuning work on the F1 engines 3 yr ago)and the audi dtm engines, about doing some work on the galant engines , and he said he could do it no problem ,anything we wanted including coating of the bores new crank pistons rods heads inconel exhaust manifolds etc ,but (well okay a really really big but) we would need to arrange an contract with him the minnimum cost of this would be over 6 figures , my response to this was , i tried to remain cool calm and collected whilst saying hmmmmm i have to talk to every one else and get back to you
