ive just reinstalled XP (again) :(
the reason i did was cos explorer kept crashing when thumbnailing vids in a folder
but after reinstall... ITS DOING IT AGAIN!
anyone any help here?

have you try'd downloading mozilla firefox

Open a comand prompt
(start > all programs > accessories > comand prompt)
And type:
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
This will solve your problem but will stop you seeing the little pic of the vid in your thumbnails.
To undo the above type:
regsvr32 shmedia.dll
The problem is basically your Xvid codec.
Try updating it or uninstalling. The fix above will work though.

which version is best to use then?
incidentally the issue isnt with the browser its with explorer
i use firefox in work though

I wasn't refering to explorer as in internet explorer but the windows explorer for desktop stuff.
Ironically I had the same problem as you but it was after I installed the 'latest' version of Xvid because mine was simply corrupt and the video was jerky.
Installing the latest version corrected my video problem but it made explorer crash everytime I viewed a list of videos in my video folder.
It hasn't been determined whether it's the codec or a crappy encoded video problem.
Either way, the above fix worked for me.
