Well I woke up this bright and sunny day with the intention of doing some stuff around the house. However, the wife is away so I though "**** it, I'll go to Santa Pod instead!" :D

What better way to get some numbers from the bog standard VR4 before I get to work on it......so here are my details:

Run 1:

Full Auto mode, Launch about 2300 RPM
15.502 seconds @ 87.81 mph

Run 2:

Tiptronic, shifting @ about 6k, Launch about 2300 RPM
15.898 @ 77.46 mph INSERT INTO post VALUES (official)
15.79 @ 135 kmh INSERT INTO post VALUES (84 mph) INSERT INTO post VALUES (APEXi Rev Speed Meter)

Run 3:

Full Auto mode, Air filter removed, Launch about 2300 RPM
15.492 @ 88.75 mph INSERT INTO post VALUES (official)
204 BHP @5517 RPM INSERT INTO post VALUES (APEXi Rev Speed Meter)

Run 4:

Full Auto mode, Air filter removed, Launch about 1800 RPM
15.850 @ 77.76 mph INSERT INTO post VALUES (official)
15.73 @ 143 kmh INSERT INTO post VALUES (89 mph) INSERT INTO post VALUES (APEXi Rev Speed Meter)

Run 5:

Full Auto mode, Air filter removed, Launch about 1600 RPM
15.834 @ 77.76 mph INSERT INTO post VALUES (official)
15.68 @ 139 kmh INSERT INTO post VALUES (87 mph) INSERT INTO post VALUES (APEXi Rev Speed Meter)

All in all a good day out, although I was slightly disappointed that the car can change quicker than I can!! Really consistent times and very accurate APEXi RSM figures mean that I can check my mods without doing the expensive round trip to the Pod!

I have some video, I will edit it and add it soon! INSERT INTO post VALUES (somehow!)

lots of good info. I'd keep something back so you've got the upper hand at the pod in October!;) Did you simply hold onto the brake pedal with your left foot for the "take offs". did you try a "normal" start?

By October I will have another 70-80BHP so I will have the upper hand again! :hurrah:

All of the starts were holding on the Brake with the left foot, didn't see any point doing a 'normal' start. However I think that too much holding with the left foot may be detremental to the torque converter! :nono:

In the 3 days I have owned my Legnum I have been more than impressed with its smooth power delevery, its not the quickest car I've ever driven but its just so comfortable and effortless..............that may change when I start trying to wring 400 horses from it!!!:scared1:

I have heard that removing the Air filter can cause damage to the turbines in the turbo
Dust is being sucked through and hitting them at very high speed ie. 150000 rpms or some thing like that anyway ????

I am sure running without a filter long term is very bad as you describe, but for four 15 second runs I think I can live with the consequences! Didn't seem to have any effect anyway! I do wonder about the claims of aftermarket filters....!!!!!

Dave

Some good info there mate. I was a little disappointed to see that you never made 100+ mph over the finish line though - would have thought it was possible in a VR4?

Sub 15seconds appears to be the goal for Pod in October then and 100+ mph ?

Pete

Sub 15 should be easily acheivable with a mildly modded VR4, be prepared to be blown away by some hot hatches though........I know its not nice, but there is some seriously quick stuff lurking around!

Hmmmmm cant add the video by attaching a file, I'll pop them on my web server and they should be ready soon!

Vids are compressed a lot to save space!

Run 1........beaten by a V8 Escort Drag car......hence all the noise and missed gearchanges.....hehehehehe!

Run 1 (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.hidle/images/run1.wmv)

Run 3.........my best run and I was filming the bleedin' dash board! Thrashed the Toyota GT Apex next to me though!

Run 3 (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.hidle/images/run3.wmv)

Run 5........now I am only adding this to show what should be possible! The vanishing white blob is a Saphire Cossie that has been heavily modded, ended with a 12.0 1/4 mile at 116mph! It was doing 95mph after just 7.8 seconds, no wonder it pasted me! :INSERT INTO post VALUES (

what revs were you launching from the other times?

enigma

The revs are all listed at the top of the thread................

of course, silly me was all the same day..

did you try any higher? like middle 4k's? or higher?

3500 is best launch for manual..

enigma

I tried to get the revs up, but the engine wanted to rip the brakes off! 2500rpm seems to be the most I could hold without the car wanting to creep forwards. Holding on the torque converter is a good way to kill the gearbox! Oil gets hot, pressure rises, seals fail........hmmm sounds like something I read on another post!

Launching with a manual is much easier, but the auto is so much more pleasant to drive in traffic!

This website (http://www.fantasycars.com/sedans/html/galant.html)reports 14 secs for the 1/4 mile.

I take these drivers must be thrashing the car.

I think 14 seconds for a standard VR4 is a bit on the optomistic side!!! Granted the manual will be a tad quicker than the auto as you can get a better launch, but not 1.4 seconds!

The following link gives a 1/4 mile and BHP calculator, and when you put the details in everything seems to hang together.

1/4 mile calculator (http://www.torinocobra.com/horsepower.htm)

Eg.

Vehicle weight, 3608 INSERT INTO post VALUES (in lbs, 1560kg plus a fatty in the seat!)
1/4 mile trap speed 88.7

gives a BHP at the wheels of 196.5BHP

Using this in the next box.......

Vehicle weight, 3608
BHP 196.5

gives

ET of 15.36 seconds @ 88.69 mph

:cool1: looks like I was right on the money!!

I guess the results from the Pod in October will be the best guide

Nice videos Dave - once your going the 15seconds seems to fly by - looking forward to Pod :D

Do these calculators take into consideration 4 wheels receiving power. i.e. more rubber driving the wheels. Less slip etc.

:soapbox:

BUMP!!! :devil5: :devil5:

Look at the figures for Dave's Legnum when it was but a standard one!!! I feel that us V6 owners now have a target in sight!!... :gun2:

15.898 @ 77.46 mph was Dave's slowest time. Given that the V6 will do a 16.2 @88 MPH, I think we've got some potential here! MWAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!!! :-b :evil2:
