Hi there

I believe my gearbox is getting a but noisey, mostly whining in 1-3rd gears plus un unpleasant noise on overun/engine breaking.
It is my Galant 24v maunal with 91K on the clock. My clutch is getting a little tired, it is the original one as far as i am aware so it is not like the car has been ragged to death.

Is this a common thing?
Is it easy to fix?
Will i need a nex box?
Does anyone have a good second hand one?
How much is it likely to cost?

Many thanks

Paul

How much is it likely to cost? If its input bearings £800 max. A new one is £1500 incl fitting (I know!)

Its not the release bearing is it?
Do a search for gearbos noise, you should be able to find some clues....

Hi Paul

The noise stops if i engage the clutch (whilst on the move) and statrs as soon as i let it up. No noise when the car is stationary, well

Seems to be a very common issue this does. Paul's pretty much covered it, I would expect it to be the input shaft bearings. I was quoted about £500 to get it sorted at the place that fixed Derek's gearbox (thread somewhere).

Habbers, you could be in luck, it MIGHT be just your clutch release bearing. Best option would be to take it to a gearbox specialist that you know are good. Ideally a personal recommendation from someone who has used them previously. ANYONE??

I'd try FGR (Front Garden Racing) in south Manchester if you've got gearbox probs - ask Barry or Wouter for their credentials

Thanks for the replies and advice.

I have taken into a local place i use for work on my car. They recon it is the release bearing by the noise and that is is well and truly fecked. The clutch is pretty much worn out as well and can be made to slip under accelleration.

Habbers?? do u get this noise only over 5000rpm???No, at all revs, noise changes with revs/speed. It does not do it with the clutch engaged though or whilst coasting in/out of gear with the clutch engaged.

Clutch is pretty fecked and just slightly 'dragging' on the flywheel if i let the clutch up a few mm's i am hoping it is the release bearing. Elvis (no jokes before you even think about it! - Than you verry muuch) the mechanic who looked/listened to it recons it is the bearing but will only know once he has the gearbox off and the bearing/clutch out.

Finger crossed for Monday but a back-up plan is never a bad thing
