For my car not me before you cheeky beggars get started!

I am struggling to get any more weight out of the car for the weekend - any ideas? :embarasse

Helium baloons...

Put the standard brakes back on.

Put a smaller steering wheel on.

Employ me as your driver (with my fearsome 8 stone bulk!)

i suppose obvious stuff - no spare, load cover, any trim that can be unscrewed/ bolted (and easily put back on), engine cover, rear seats, passanger seat, stereo equip, door trims.....

how far do you want to take it? as far as Derek - or is that too far?

Standard brakes are heavier!

I already have a standby driver if required.

No idea how easy/difficult it is to do, but how about the tailgate itself......must weigh quite a bit.....? Would it affect handling or aerodynamics though ?

One weight saving mod that seems to have paid off is to use nitrous jets with bigger holes in them.......saved ozs but gained big HP!

How easy is it to remove the plastics from inside (not around) the wheel arches? Not sure they would make a big difference anyway.

Sound proofing including the carpets and mats (I think the sound proofing under the bonnet might also provide some degree of fire protection? :inquisiti might be called for if you've done that much to the VR4)

Remove seatbelts - install harnesses.

Remove glass - install netting.

Drill big holes in all panels that you can't remove

Cut off the roof (convertible VR4)

Take out the stereo, speakers, wiper motors, and all other unnecessary electronics

Hello mate,

heres a few for you (please excuse me if they are a little dumb, i dont know heaps about these motors yet).....

Run with just the minimum amount of gas in the tank. (i drain mine dry and then add just 4 litres.)

Remove your wing mirrors and rear spoiler but tape over the holes.

Remove your wipers

If you have bolt on towing eyes, remove them.

Remove the squizer tanks and brackets, pumps the whole lot if you can.

This is contravertial, but you could go for any crash bars if Vr4's have them. (Gto's have a monster ally crash bar behind the bumper and 2 bif steel hydraulic holders)

If you have aircon, take the pump off and if necesarry put on shorter belts.

Along the same lines, bin the aircon rad, all the pipe work and the condensor, reciever-dryer etc)

Hope something in there was useful!

Cheers,

Ben.

Take off the front bumper... better airflow to the radiator and intercooler.

Get someone to panelbeat alu body panels.

Fill the tyres with helium (Not hydrogen... don't want a hindenburg situation)

Remove door mirrors, rear view mirror, sun visors, headlamps, etc

I read somewhere that the aerodynamic profile of the car can be improved by putting a line of masking tape over the panel gaps to prevent a vortex being generated there. Only a marginal difference, but then...... every little helps!!;)

unhook the AYC... unless you have a standard rear diff, you cant get rid of that but you might be able to take the pump and stuff out. I wouldn't expect AYC to be much help in a straight line.

Kieran
05-10-2005, 09:27 PM
Daft as it sounds, it is! AYC doesn't just help round corners. The torque transfer capability of the rear diff helps in less than perfect launch conditions.

I haven't done much in the way of drag racing, so i'm just guessing,

but do you need side skirts when going down the track?

and, does the strut brace do anything in a straight line?

Also, it doesn't weigh much, but you could take out the glovebox door?

Maybe you could pop out the clock, and unplug it?

or take the valve covers off the tyres, must weigh something /pan ...

I realise most of these things weigh about as much as a decent hamburger, but it sounds like you've had a good go at it already. I'll be keen to hear how it all works out. (and if you can out it back together again :inquisiti )

So how much weight have you actually saved so far? 50kg's?

Have you removed the strut bar? What about running on lighter 15" tyres? They will have a smaller radius, and will let you accerlate a little quicker due to this, as well as they will be a little lighter.

You could also remove the back half of the center console, where the cup holders and stuff are.

Lastly have you tried starving youself?

Ok .. So i think the weight loss thing is sorted.. /Hmmm

Have you thought anymore about getting your power down to the TarMac.. How about some of those spring stiffener things to stop the rear end of your car squatting down to much and soaking up the power transfer to the wheels. Also on the fronts to and some clamps on the front springs to stop the front end lifting.. You can use the clamps to lower the suspension then clamp the stiffeners in the gaps. With all that weight loss the ride height must have increased and the weight difference will certainly make a difference to how much the car will pitch under acceleration.. :inquisiti

I have super stiff aftermarket coilover shock absorbers......dont think it will make a huge difference! I cant lower the car anymore as the side exit exhaust will drag on the floor!

Thats Super Stiff in the downward direction, but with the extra lack of weight and increase of power the front is going t lift more than usual, making traction a little more difficult. The AYC and TC are going to have a hard enogh job keeping the power on the Tarmac as it is .. Just thought it would make a fair bit of difference. Your ride height must have changed a little ?? Maybe worthwhile fabricating some bits to take with you just in case.. /Hmmm Try the without and then with approach.. I still think the main aspect is making sure that your gearbox is as cool as possible when you run.. Once it warms up to much, the launches and changes are never quite the same .. :o
