Can anyone recommend a good place to get mechanical insurance through for a 2000 VR4 and what sort of $$ would I be looking at?

if you already have the car then there is only one place that will probably look at you and that is warranty's direct, google them. :)

i dont know how much it cost get a new one, i bought a car already insured by the previous owner, however it cost me $100 to have insurance transferred to me.

not many companies will transfer a warranty, if the car was not purchased with one your options are limited, also they tend to put a 30 day waiting period on.

the AA gave me a full mechanical and electrical insurance for 3 years with no excess and unlimited claims for around $1700, and i had had the car for around a month,
