well since the weather has been rather ****, when ever im home,
i decided (in my extreme boredom)
to replace as many of the accessory lights as possible with blue leds.
(blue light is sexy /yes )
ive done the AC screen aswell,

but,

Ive found that the led's light is to dierct for this
and leaves 2 quite bright spots on the screen...

anyone know if i can cut the lences on the leds a certain way?
so the light is more spread rather than focused on one spot?

you could get smoked leds, or simply duller leds.

Were you able to do the gauges in the centre, like the tacho and speedo? Those would look cool in blue.

havent pulled that out yet, may have a look in the weekend... not sure on how many more leds i would need...

the a/c unit uses 4 leds,
spotlight switch used 1 led
mirror control used 1 led,
cig lighter used 1 led, (didnt do the ash try since i have my bass controller in there, which i put a blue led in aswell)

duller leds wouldnt work, as its just bright enough now (for the day light, nights fine)
i just need a better more even spread of light

Interesting, I've been wanting to go down the blue road with my car. What size are the LEDs? I imagine they're the 5mm '286' type.

I've already replaced the ones in the tiptronic (that's a 501), the cubby hole in the centre console and the glovebox (blue 286s).

Just checked on ultraleds.co.uk, and it seems 130degree wide angle LEDs are in 501 fitment only..... /Hmmm

yeh im using 5mm 5000mcd leds, (sorry dont know what you mean but 286/501 types)
bought 10 or these of trademe.co.nz for $5.00 to my door...
i may have to get some wide angle ones to sort it out...
but if all the diff is a differently cut lense i would give it a go.

problem solved...

all you habe to do is file the top of the led flat and you get a better spread of light,

its all sexy now :)

Do you have any photos of what these look like?

I've been thinking of doing my interior lights as well. Have you done the red/white lights in the front doors?

Cheers,

Jono

Id be interested in some photos of this too! Just mount the camera on something stable, and take the photo WITHOUT flash, and a longer exposure time. In the dark obviously - the photo should come out great :)

Hey Gly you used 5000mcd LEDs - I was wondering if the 10000mcd were brighter but still same v/w rating as to not screw anything up (but be quite bright). Or are the 5000 quite sufficient?? cheers dude...

i personally would go for the 10k mcd, if i were to redo it,
due to the fact its hard to see during sunny days,
at night its fine.

also when i installed them i got resistors for working at 12v
i should have worked it out for 14v as when the cars running the batterys being charged, so ive burnt out a couple.

also the ac button light works at 12v and the screen is at 7v with lights of and drops to 3.5v when lights come on and dim the ac.

ill try to get some pic's tonight.

best i can do..

the led on that lights the left side is burnt out due to having the wrong resistor,
but these give you a fair idea of the look you will get

It does look really good in person too. I would also be interested in changing the lights for the gear selection in the dash from green to blue, but I'm way too scared to do it.

Could you lighten it up with white lights so it matched the dash and the clock? Definitely demand!!

Gly

you could light it up with what ever colour you like.
i choose blue coz its cool, LOL

ive just ordered some leds (40000mcd, 10000mcd & 5000mcd and resistors for 14v)

so ill have a write up with pics mid to late next week.

Nick - white LEDs aren't a problem to get. I've put one in my latest project at work (blue is so last season...). They're EXTREMELY bright typically, and vary from pale blue to slight purple colours.

... (blue is so last season...)

I don't reckon - It's all up to the aesthetics that you're after...
The reason I want blue is cos my head unit is blue lit and t'would finish the whole dash in similar light... PEARLER!

Reaally wanna do the instrument panel too.... blue with the red needles WHOA :afro:

It would be alot easier to just replace the standard bulbs with coloured variants as Kieran has done. A 286 is not an LED but a wedge bulb. They are available in various colours and even high power variants and are a direct replacement. No need for soldering, resistors and LED's.
