Brake discs are very badly warped now so thinking about going the Brembo route. Are these the right ones though?

Cool, the guy thats selling them lives in my home town. Are they pretty much a straight swap? How much should I be spending?

If your car is post facelift you should be up and running in under an hour!

I paid £500 for a set of fronts and backs including hoses and discs. So I guess £200 would be reasonable for a pair of calipers (pads are £115ish a pair)

Placed my bid, waiting to see what happens. What discs do I need and how much are they?

(I have the approval from the wife to replace the discs. I manage to get £300 approved for the job, but I am sure that I can stretch that a little more with a few white lies)

I think evo 5-8 are all the same? The clipers are all the same fitment and offset, so I would imagine that the discs are too.

I have standard evo discs on mine - they came with the calipers - and they seem to work well. But I'm sure grooved/drilled performance jobbies would be better.

Keep you eye on the MLR - they often argue about brakes and sometimes have group buys on performance discs/pads.

Bought the calipers for £225, just need to pick them up now. I need to buy some discs to go with them though, so I think I will take your advice Nick and get some drilled/grooved ones.

Just need to know whether they will fit over the standard VR4 wheels or will I need to buy some new alloys too :) (That will not make the wife happy when I tell her)

Are there any other issues I might need to know about before I try and fit them myself?

Standard wheels will not fit over the brembos. You will need 17's, and even then they won't necessarily fit! You need clearance between the inside edge of the spoke and the outward pointing face of the caliper.

Thanks Nick,

I am looking forward to breaking that news to the wife.....NOT!!! So new alloys here we come. So, 17" wheels will fit over as long as there is enough room between the rear of the front face of the alloy and the Brembo.

Need to start looking for reasonably priced alloys now then.

I will have some for sale when the car arrives from Japan! :smug:

I got around the problem by having some second hand Evo wheels. That works! And again, looking at the MLR you should be able to see a selection of aftermarket wheels that will fit over the brembos.

Good luck breaking the news and have fun shopping!

I may be interested then Dave. Are you intending to have an auction of the parts?

No auction, just first come first served!

Okay, will make sure that I get in there with a reasonable offer then.

Just been looking at the offset thing. I figure that I should be looking for a 17" x 8" wheels with an offset >40. The greater the offest the more space for the Brembos up to the point where the tyres will extend beyond the wing and may start to rub. Is that right?

It is the shape of the spoke more than the offset, but I think you are thinking along the right lines.

Except I think you have the offset back to front. A bigger offset means the center of the wheel is closer to the edge of the wheel, therefore your wheel sits further towards the car.

If I am right, then:
+ve offset moves the wheel in to the car
-ve offset moves the wheel out and away.

okay, picked up the brakes. I now need some cheap(ish) wheels. Found these on e-bay from Rochford tyres. Will they fit do you reckon?

Okay, so I should be looking for 17" (or 18") x >7 5x114 et 40?

Nick Mann

Yes.

I would be finding somewhere to try the wheel over the brakes if you can, as then you can be sure that they fit. If you find a supplier in Brum I'll try to get my car to them to test the wheel fitment over the caliper.

Can't fit the brakes until I get big enough wheels
Can't check wheel fitment until I fit the brakes

...bu99er!!

Yeah, catch 22! Like I said, if I can I'll help you with that one. I'm sure there would be other volunteers in other areas too.

I think that I am going to try and get some ex-EVO wheels. There is a deal still on for some on MLR

You could always try for cheap as chips 2nd hand Evo wheels with worn tyres? Probably gettable for £200. Use them as the wheels to put over the brembos to go shopping for other wheels that fit. Then sell the Evo wheels again or keep them for track-days?

Looks like I may be going for the deal on MLR and then fit some Falkens from www.blackcircles.com. Should come in at around £660-£680
