ive been asked to find out about the replacing of the t/c

i need to know how to get the gearbox out

can it be dropped under the car or does the engine need to come out?

Nick Mann

Assuming it is not too different from the VR4, it will come out underneath without taking the engine out. To be fair, though, you aren't far away from taking the engine out as only one of the four mounts is left on!!

i think the v6 is same as vr4 apart from not needing out take out the following.
1 turbo pipes
2 prop shaft
3 transfer box
4 strut brace
should be much easer to do.

i phoned my mate last night

finally got the 'box out at about midnight.. yes he swore at me! ;)

said the TC is defo shagged but the splines on the gearbox shaft are a bit worn too, so he is going to take it to an auto specialist in preston i believe to inspect.

if not i think i might be spending more than just a TC MO!

latest update

the splines on the gearbox shafted are.. shafted

and its not the original TC in the box, this is the 2nd one at least!

so its getting rebuilt this week :(

another update! (let me know if this is boring you!)

went to see the car today.. the engine has been hoisted to support it and bits everywhere

the story is this...

the original tc (i presume unless more than 2 have been in it).. the inner splines wore away and damaged the inner shaft on the gearbox

the 2nd tc then did the same thign and wore the splines even more, which now means i need a new inner shaft cos its beyond use anymore..

my gearbox is in a gearbox specialist in the middle of preston somewhere, where the owner will find a replacement shaft hopefully and all seals and filter will be included (nice of him)

sorry bout this mo, but my mate managed to get the hardened splined TC for 200 quid for me, which was bought from this company.. reckons a 2nd hand shaft will be approx 100 quid maybe, not sure yet, will know cost on monday

but it means the gearbox will be stripped :(

Sounds like at least it will be a proper job at the end. Keep telling us, we're still listening!

Hopefully it will be resolved soon.

will know on monday if the guy can find a 2nd hand shaft or i get a new one but he told me that if he gets me a new one he will ensure i get the modified shafts which have extended ends with longer splines to get more contact with the TC.

he doesnt reckon the previous TC was enforced either.

another update (tell me when to stop!)

gearbox inner shaft cannot be obtained via recon

new part only

shaft and TC and rebuild gearbox plus oils and seals

550 quid!

the pics are on my garage but i can only have 3 on there????

also ive been advised the best way to check the level of ATF is to have it running warm and with the engine on and the gear in neutral

so the gearbox bloke says anyway

Yep. Get the car and the gearbox fluid nice and warm (10 minute drive).

Stop on level ground, go through and select all the gears you can, then return to N and make sure the fluid level is inbetween the 'Hot' marks.

Interesting thread.

This happened to me in November and it cost just under £700. Never very nice before Christmas!

did you get the reinforced gear shaft and TC rather than stock items?
