How about a forum for ebay items? People can register their interest on a first-come, first-served basis in a thread per item (mandate having item no and describtion in thread title). If the first person drops out then the next person can bid on the item.
It stops bidding wars between club members and means that the item(s) will be obtained at lower cost.
