As you might remember, from this thread http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10138

nearly 4 and a half months later,,,,,,

thanks to this so called specialist auto box repair place in leicester, My car is still not running.

Here are the problems we have found.

Internal ATF filter,,, it was absolutely soooo dirty so fluid couldnt flaw
Broken aluminium casing circlip grooveing...
This is the circlip whic holds the main piston wave spring, spring plate and it normaly sits on the inner centre of the casing.

I have found a company to re engineer the casing new deeper grooving done and for the reason had to find a fatter wider circlip. yep I have found a firm in switserland to do one of for me so thats done. And the metal plate whic holds the wavyspring needed replacing, I have found the engineering company to make me exact copy so thats done, overhaul kit etc etc. After hours of struggling with this workshop and all the hassle I had with them . They have put the gearbox all together and installed on tho the car.

Now this is the new problem I have, test drive results are follows:

In auto mode

Engage 1st OK
driving engaging to 2nd ??? it goes in to 2nd but in the same second it kinda a goes in to 2nd again so its finding it strange to go in to 2nd but when it engages its ok
Engaging 3rd ok
engaging 4th ok
engaging 5th ok
Going the opposite,,
5th to 4th ok
4th to 3rd ok
3rd to 2nd ok
2nd to 1st ok
Reverse OK
Its only 1st to 2nd gets a bit confusing. Its like going in to 2nd twice in a row

Its the same in tip mode

I am absolutely so end of my tether. and I am planing to take this firm to court and take every possible legal action towards them.

Any advice any info any help much needed.

The box I have just taken out 'cause it snapped an output shaft was doing that into 4th. The box I am now running is doing that into 3rd. Only on the upchange, not on the down.

How long have you been driving it since the box was re-fitted? Have you checked the fluid level?

If the answers are 500 miles and yes then I'd be concerned. If the answers are 50 miles and no, then give it a bit longer. The gearbox brain will try to iron out the way the box is changing gear - sometimes that can take hundreds of miles. Also not enough or too much oil can cause the box to misbehave.

Nope. I would log with them that you are taking the car only to see if the problem calms down.

Drive it in tip as well as full auto to see if that makes any difference.

Don't be too aggressive as the box will think you want to drive like a madman and will become aggressive in the way it changes gear.

No idea what causes the problem yet - will let everyone know when I get there!

Have you read about my woes?

Absolutely pants

under compression there is a whining noise second gear takes ages to engage revs go up also gear selector making lots of noise I think its coming from valve body and Guess what They havent got a clue.

They didnt let medrive my OWN car for a test drive and when I said I just wanted to pay them whatever and take my car out they didnt let me do that either Who the hell they think they are.
And now Trading standards agency
Retail Motor industry federation and
My solicitors getting involved with this.
I have given them MORE time after 4 and a half months till next friday to get it right. We will wait and see.

Crumbs.... You're having a hell of a time - My sympathies!!

Okay - there's a place called 'Ivan Autos' in the South that have rebuilt a few member's gearboxes - they seem to know the V5A51 quite well, as it's now used on some UK-Spec mitsus.

Ivan Autos - 01707 646542

Now - As for the whining noise and the shunty gearchange.... It may not be the box at fault... Or, at least something else is making it worse. Allow me to explain...

My transmission mount has finally given up and collapsed, and my other mounting points are also not far off letting go.. They're all split and tired. Since it gave up the ghost I can hear significantly more transmission howl (increasing with road speed, not engine speed) and there's also a lot more 'shunting' going on. This is all because the gearbox has sank a bit (as it's not being located correctly) and it's now touching the centre crossmember. The shunting is happening because there's far too much play in the mounts and so engine and gearbox can move about.

Seeing as your gearbox has been removed/replaced, I wonder if a mounting is loose, or one was on the brink and the removal and replacement was the final straw? :inquisiti

Just a thought - I would've thought that if the box hadn't been rebuilt correctly, something else would have gone pop by now..... :inquisiti

Good luck!
