VR4's are getting so cheap now

Anyone else noticed how much the price of VR4s have fallen in the last 3 months or so.

Dropped significantly in Japan as well. Would only cost $7000-8000 on the road for a tidy 1997 low-med KM VR4 now. $10,000 plus 6 months ago. 10K will get a decent face-lift now.

NZ$ 7,000 = £2,800
NZ$ 10,000 = £4,000 (roughly)

These prices are certainly lower than UK prices for similar VR4's that you mention - but maybe not by a large margin.

So what is the reason? Numerous factors I would suggest, but two in particular come to mind .

1] A massive excess of production capacity worldwide. New cars are starting to be stacked up in uprecedented numbers and prices dropping. More people buy a new car every couple of years as prices become more competitive - people are getting richer with larger disposable incomes. The second hand car market is getting flooded and prices drop accordingly.

2] Slowly but surely people are becoming 'greener' and won't buy gas guzzlers (even though they have the higher disposable income).

On top of this the VR4 never was a 'mainstream' vehicle and is rarely recognised. How many times have you been asked, 'What is it?' And once you tell them (and possibly take them for a drive) they will invariably say that they are surprised they had never heard of a car with such ample size AND high performance.

i test drove a manual 96 with 160km's on the clock today for $5200...

sure it had a few things wrong with it - it was missing the stereo - the brakes and power steering pump needed replacing... quite few other things... but it was still a VR4 for 5k...

would almost be worth buying as parts... or to use as an auto-to-manual conversion donor...

Those are the prices to import. Although you can get a good preface lift in NZ for $10,000-11,000 now, which is about $3,000-5,000 cheaper than a couple of months ago.

Main reason they are getting cheaper is probably the 7yr rule they have in japan. After a car is 7 yrs old it costs a fortune for them to register it, so they just replace it.
