I got mine from this person: http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/show_member_listings.asp?member=24671

with 600*300*76 and without serious power mods, i doubt any big name brands are really going to perform enough (if any) better to be worth it.

Some things to look for:
Pressure drop (0.2psi at 15psi seems to be reasonably standard)
Pressure it is tested to
End tank inlet/outlet size. if 3" then you will need reducers if you use standard pipe.
mount points. helps to have mount points alread in the correct locations

PS: with mine when I get out after a thrash, the inlet side is warm but outlet is stone cold

^^thats a good price...what size u get?

thanx for the help everyone...probably get one soonish to add to all the other sh!t i got for my car that hasnt been put in yet..is the standard piping all good to use if upgrading the IC?

ahhh another thing, might as well get my decat pipe put in, what bolts and stuff do i need again?

4 X (M10 X 45), 4 X bolts, 8 X flat washers, 4 X spring washers.

any specific types of bolts, flat washers and spring washers?? got the "M10 x 45" bolts

edit: ahhh another thing lol, i got a 3" apexi exhaust on TE a lil while back, but i dont think it goes all the way to the turbos..would it be possible to get someone like pitstop or whatever to carry the 3" piping on? if so how much ya reckon??

soz bout all the questions..

600x300x76 brand new polished ;)

I'm planning to use standard piping for now, but upgrade later on. At the same time while I'm installing the FMIC, I'm planning on upgrading the oil cooler :)

Have no idea about the decat pipe and bolt questions sorry :)

the most important part is the CORE.

look inside the intercooler. it needs to have hundreds of little folded fins. rather than half a dozen tubes

Where from? /Hmmm

It was a one off. Apparently the guy who bought it sold it shortly after his Legnum got stolen. He was planning to put it on his Legnum.

So I offered $200 and got it ;)

Does going to a 600*300*76 improve performance? I have read so many conflciting posts, some say it is good others say it results in fuelling problems.

For people who have installed one themselves is it much of a job?

Kenneth
05-01-2006, 08:37 PM
I believe it does improve performance.

I do not seem to have fueling issues. BDA did, but then he did all his piping at the same time. I think he also had some boost leaks, cant remember if he still had the issues after.
Could be that with the piping all done the ECU saw elevated air flow vs RPM and had kittens.

Personally I found the biggest issue was modifying the piping to attach to standard pipes. You would probably be better off doing a piping kit at the same time.

You will also have to decide how you are going to attach you intercooler.

I had use of an engineering workshop which made things much eaiser.

what about 600x300x76 versus 600x300x100, I know that there is more overall surface area, but then the frontal area of each is the same, would there really be much differance?

have you seen how close my IC is to the bumper? the bumper had to be trimmed, so basically that extra 24mm is going to come straight out of the bumper. other than that, its not going to make much difference at all.

to be honest, if i could do it again i would try get a 600x270x76 or some such.

you would go 2.5" piping to the turbos, then 3" where the turbos down pipes join.

up to you really, though they should be getting pretty good at doing VR-4 down pipes by now :)

That looks nice, it makes the stock one look terrible. ABIM's a good guy, how many beers did it cost you? :)

OSiRiS
09-01-2006, 07:33 PM
It didn't cost me in beers! But for the amount I paid I was very please as it included installation, all brackets and piping needed for it to happen on the spot. Took 3 hours of his time too!

Very happy at the outcome. After 50km of hard driving after the IC was installed, the inlet is very hot to touch and the outlet is very very cold. I'm going to get some temperature sensors running to see how much the drop in temperature is :)

btw for anyone who didn't know, the lines that run across the standard intercooler are NOT oil cooler lines. They are for your power steering :P

bradc
09-01-2006, 08:02 PM
I remember reading somewhere they were for the power steering. It would be interesting to see what the intercooler outlet temperature is.

OSiRiS
10-01-2006, 09:14 AM
Yea after it was installed I drove 50km all the way back to my place from ABIM's and the inlet was ****ing hot. The outlet tho was ice cold.

I also noticed that it holds 9psi while your foot is down, and when it changes gears it spikes to 11psi. Don't know if that's good or bad or ok.

Rossco Type-S

I've found this board is rather devoid of tech threads and factual data, so I've decided to start adding some. I'll start with intercooler tech since there was just an argument about this on a local board during which I realised there was a lot of bad information floating around.

The following info applies to air to air applications.

Tube and Fin - Pros
Generally weighs about half as much as a bar and plate core of similar dimensions
Generally less expensive
Generally less flow restriction within the core than bar and plate designs
Less flow restriction through the exterior allowing better flow to the rear of the core and to a radiator, AC condenser, tranny or oil cooler, etc. which may be behind it

Cons -
Those with less flow restriction than bar and plate cores offer less heat rejection
Generally have more fins which means they're more likely to be damaged by rocks/debris which cuts down on cooling efficiency
Charge air entry extends beyond core wall making it more difficult for air to enter the core cleanly

Bar and Plate - Pros
Generally off greater heat rejection than tube and fin design
Those with turbulators offer even greater heat rejection
Offered in tons of varying shapes and sizes
Less likely to be damaged by rocks and debris
Charge air entry sits flush with core allowing for cleaner entry

Cons -
Weighs about twice as much as a similarly size tube and fin core
More expensive
Blocks more airflow to radiators, etc. which may be behind it
Those with turbulators have greater flow resistance to the charge air

Remember that there's a balancing act between cooling and airflow restriction within the core. The more densely packed turbulators are within a bar and plate core the more cooling will be done as the air passes through, but the greater flow is restricted. Alternatively, air blowing straight through a pipe isn't restricted or cooled much at all.

In the above, when they refer to a turbulator, they are referring to the fins as shown in the picture below:

OSiRiS
10-01-2006, 09:20 PM
Here's what the charge air entries look like on a tube and fin vs. bar and plate. This tube and fin has lots of turbulators and the bar and plate doesn't have a whole lot, which goes to show that within each type there is a lot of variation.

thanx for the info bro...

OSiRiS

No probs :)

So to sum it up bar and plate would be the better option for heat dissapation.

Andy said the bits made up for him to get his cooler on were quite expensive. 2 alloy joiner pipes and 2 silicon hoses. 1 silicon hose is a straight 3" to 2" (from memory) and the other one is a 90 degree 3" to 2" which would be a plain bitch to find off the shelf.

So I think it was a matter of right place right time for me :D
