I've got two buckled wheels and mitsu are charging stupid
amounts for new replacements.

Searching through the posts our sport alloys are 215/45 r17.
Also the posts mentioned that they are originally made by
Rimstock/TeamDynamics from their 'Motorsport range'

I've checked several sites i.e. http://www.wheel-base.co.uk/site/
the dimensions specified are 205/40 r17....
...
......have we got the wrong sized tyres on our rims?

cheers,
scc

I dont think we have the wrong size. But I do know for a fact that the Team Dynamics Motorsport range is no longer and they definatly dont make them in 17" anymore. I rang them a while ago. I have, as far as im aware, 4 of the last Team Dynamics motorsport alloys on my V6 and im running 225/45R17's on mine and its fine :)

That quote is wrong. 215/45 17 is correct for the galant. That is the original size tyre for the sports 17 wheels and the same rolling radius as the 195 tyres fitted to the 14 and 15 inch rims. I would go 225/45 17 if I were in your position - that is the best size for the VR4 and shouldn't send your speedo out by much.

205/40 17 will give a smaller radius, worse ride, probably less grip and your speedo will be reading miles out!

205/40/17 are wrong for the galant - i have a set of 17s with these tyres and it makes the handling twitchy, the ride bumpy and looks wrong - they make a lowered car look like it needs lowered!!!!!:rolleyes4

I put my 15s back on untill i can be bothered to get some 215/45s or 225/45s

Thanks Gents,

Wouldn't an incorrect rolling radius not only throw your speed out, but also the build up of errors on the trip counter?

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that if I were able to get the 17" motor sport team dynamic alloys...are they the same in every respect to the sport alloys from mitsubishi? I can see that the centre cap looks different, but the confusion comes from the fact that they market it as a 205/40/17, whereas I have 215/45/17 tyres on my mitsubishi???

Cheers

I think 2 or 3 CVR4 members have the team dynamics wheels fitted and they are absolutley fine. Mine are slightly over diameter as I have 225 45 17 tyres fitted and if those tyres fit then 215 45 17's sure will.

yes  if you can get them make sure you get the correct tyr size - 215/45/17 as you stated

who ever says its 205/40/17 doesnt know what they are talking about. Thats a standard size for diddy cars like clios etc when they go to 17s :evil2:

the 225's are a better size than the 215's as far as the speedo is concerned , mine reads 2-3 mph fast across the dial you cant get much closer than that

So..am I hearing correctly that you can fit different/slightly larger sized tyres than the specified size for the alloys?

The alloy will usually take a range of sizes of tyre. The diameter is obviously fixed to the size of the alloy. The width of the alloy dictates a range of widths of tyre tht can sensibly be used. eg 6.5" means something around 205 wide, 8" means 235 wide rubber. You can use a range of widths of rubber for a width of an alloy, though. The height of the tyre is the profile measurement - in the sizes quoted above 40 or 45. This number is expressed as a percentage of the width of the tread. So 215/40 has a smaller circumference than 215/45. But 225/45 is bigger still.

To find out what tyres can sensibly fit, I would suggest talking to the fitter about different widths etc.

Is this just getting more confusing, or did that help?

Oh I see, so when someone sells me 205/40/17 alloys, it means that I can actually fit 215/45/17 tyres on them? I really thought that if I purchased 205/40/17 alloys it meant that I had to fit matching 205/40/17 tyres.

Cheers!

The alloys will actually be something like 7JJ 17. The alloys are not measured in tyre sizes.

The 7 is the width of the alloy in inches
The JJ is the mounting type
The 17 is the diameter.

The width and mounting type have an effect on which tyres will fit.

Thanks for clearing this up. I was under a misconception hence the reason for this thread. :embarasse
