Got my EVO 7 mags installed today, looks great!

I just need to upgrade my brakes now, the stock ones look tiny. I'd be looking for discs, calipers, and pads. Any recommendations? I realise the stock EVO ones are probably one of the best options.

haha, I put it on for that chosenfew meet I attended, I think that was at the end of October. Beleive it or not, I haven't washed the car since then, and I've done about 4000km since then. Thanks Wouter and Osiris.

My mum just had a look at them, she thought they looked very very big, and suited the car very well. I was quite surprised, she normally hates everything I do to my car.

Just updated my garage too

yeah, but not too big, don't you hate all the fools driving around on 18" or 19" chrome mags on their little 4 cylinder cars with 205 wide tyres because they can't fit anything bigger under the guards

Nice car. How does it compare to that yellow Monaro I see? Also what is the red Holden you have there? Is it an Astra convertible?

I heard you have them on your car, how often did they rub on yours?

dickytim
06-01-2006, 10:28 AM
they rubbed all the time, when I took the old rims home the rubbed all the way, only just on the edges, once I had the load out of the boot it wasn;t as bad, but still around corners and over bumps, since I had the gaurds rolled it hasn't rubbed once :) BTW I wouldn't be tempted to go wider there is NO room either side with them.

robotnik, those other cars are my mums, we got the first Monaro in the country back in 2002, and that Astra converable is brand new. Interestingly her 3 cars (626 as well) are all manual......Who will make the first hassle about that - You See? Dickytim? Kenneth? hmmmm

Ghanda - yep, you're onto something there.

Dickytim, I had 5 computers in the back, plus a full tank of fuel, plus the old mags and tyres, it wasn't too happy at all! I'm delivering the old ones to Kenneth tomorrow, hopefully it will be a bit better, otherwise I'll be driving the 626 all next week

It's obvious your mum can drive....pity bout you! ..lol :leer:
The only reason why we would hassle you is that we all drive real gearboxes. :evil2:

I knew you would be the first to reply! I have done about 10000km in the 626, and had heaps of fun spinning the front wheels all the time :D Yes I can drive a manual

Tiptronics are far more practical for the stop-start traffic in Auckland. Besides on a powerful car like the VR-4, the auto isn't too much slower. in short autos rule! ;)

are they 17"s? they fit in pretty good if they are, usually see legnums around with 17"s that look way too small for the guards

yep, can do! i can steer with my knees and if nessecary i can start, stop and do the round town speed limit in 2nd gear. on the motorway i can do everything in 5th.

also, if i have a passenger i just get them to control the steering wheel. and that way i dont need ANY hands

Shady, yes they are 17's. I guess the wheel arches make them look a little differant, I think they are just the right size.

Trini, probably the easiest option is to get a set of standard evo7/8 brakes. You have very nice mags and I think your car would look even better with bigger brakes. I think I will hunt around and see if I can find any cheap options in NZ.

Thanks for the compliments guys :D

Very nice motor, what suspension u using and whats the drop/Hmmm

The springs are the only things that have changed, they are branded Tanabe Sustec, and I think their exact part code is Super H or something like that. They dropped the car by about 30mm all round, so there is more of a gap at the front wheel arch than at the back. I am thinking of getting a spacer put in at the back to raise it by about 10mm. This will make it look even all around, as well as reduce the amount of times the rear wheels rub on the guards.

Great look with those mags but I have to say that, as I've a similar set of mags sitting in the garage waiting for me to decide what tyre make and size to put on them. /Hmmm /yes

All of which makes me very interested to read the comments regarding rubbing of your tyres in the wheel arch/guards. /pan

So tell me what size are those rims - 17" x 7 1/2" wide or are they the 8" wide versions from the EVO VIII? Mine are the 7 1/2" with an offset of 39mm if I remember correctly. These usually have 225/45/ZR17 fitted. The EVO VIII uses 235/45/ZR17 rubber I think.

So what size tyres are you guys using which are causing the rubbing problems?

I was thinking of either 225/45 or 235/45's on my rims but worry the 235 may not fit inside my VR4s wheel arch (facelift model) though other club members seem to get away with them OK. /Hmmm

What gives with that? Is your lowered suspension the possible cause of the rubbing I wonder :inquisiti I hope not, as that too is an item on my 'mods to do' list so don't want rubbing problems latter on when I lower the suspension.

Cheers for the help guys.

Brads wheels are the EVO ones, 17"x 8" offset 35mm. rubber is 235 45 R17

rubbing looks marginal at the back, a small gaurd rolling will fix it.

bradc
09-01-2006, 06:31 AM
When I first had them on, they would rub all the time, as I think I said before, even on the motorway, small bumps and things like bridge expansion joints would cause the tires to rub. This was with the 4 old mags in the back, as well as a full tank of petrol, and another 50kg of stuff in the back. Now that it is down to 1/4 tank and I don't have anything else in the car you have to be trying quite hard to get it to rub, probably 2 bars on the AYC.

I think that with 7.5" mags, offset of 38mm, and 225 tyres you wouldn't have a problem. My car is quite low, and of course that further compounds the problem. If you car isn't lowered, I don't think you'd have a problem.

My car is lowered, and did rub but for $45 a side for rolling and the guy came to me it was an easy fix.

Do they flare it out by much? If they do I might get it done, just for the pumped guards :P

There won't be any external differances, just pushing out the internal stuff. I might get my wide arches integrated into the car when I get it repainted though. I hate those ugly plastic/rubber joining strips.

Real boxes are far more responsive and FASTER! :P I had no problems on the "Wellsford Run". Just stayed in 2nd and 3rd most of the time.
