Wouters car has been misfiring above 5000rpm for quite some time now. /Hmmm He's changed the plugs to Denso's, & found the the old ones we're showing signs of overheating/detonation, but still the misfire continues ? :embarasse
any suggestions ?

Buy a rev limiter set at 4900rpm :joker:

Errr..... is it a bad misfire? Any smoke? Detonation noises?

Think the clue is in the question. Missing and overheated plugs normally indicate too weak - maybe too weak to burn correctly, but not so weak as to detonate? :inquisiti

you commented on the smoke from the rear of Wouters car at Nicks last sunday ? /Hmmm It still kept up with the rest of you, but did not look or sound good. :embarasse
more investigation needed I think. /yes

Wouter has taken out a fully comprehensive policy on my car, & is now using it for the next few weeks. /yes [ I'm using his Mazda ]
unbeknown to me, he took it up to Mo's yesterday to investigate the misfire & boost leak, & got hold of some decent plugs at the right price !!
The new plugs didn't cure the problem, so further investigation needed...................... apparently ! :embarasse

Could be coil pack, could be HT leads, although it happens above 5K revs, the more demand for the spark, it could open a hairling crack in the coil pack or maybe put too mcuh load on one of the HT leads...

just a thought...

^ Id suggest coil pack too. I know they have a very similar problem on skylines, and its usually the coil pack.

I have 2 coil packs taht are OK as I was trying to cure a misfire, but it turned out to be the HT Leads (now replaced)...

You could also try to spray some silicon spray on the CP's and leads, but be careful you don't spray it on the contacts or front spark plugs :rolleyes4

a sh!tty fuel filter will cause quite a few problems , if it is restricting the fuel flow then obviously it will run lean , its probably fine at low revs for now , but demand for fuel is greater at high revs hence the starvation problems

Skylines suffer from faulty coilpacks causing misfires in the upper rpm range due to high heat causing the coilpacks to crack, thus, the spark arcs out of the coilpack, the simple solution for this is to wrap the coilpacks in insulating tape. Not sure if the VR4 Coils lend themselves to this procedure, but, it may be worth a try. See the thread on SOC:

If youve got det then turn your boost down to standard and see if that cures the misfire. Det will get worse at high rpm, and affect the spark from the plug which will be causing the misfire.

no matter, even if its NA then its still running lean if your getting det which will have the same effect.
