Hi all,

For the past few weeks my V6 sport (Manual) has been making an awful tapping/rattling sound at first I thought it was the lashers but on further investigation I discovered the sound was far to noisy and inconsistant to be them.

Took the car to my local Mitsi dealer and had one of their mechanics take a listen, we discovered the noise would disappear with the clutch engaged, I thought great a new clutch is required (thinking the thrust bearing had gone).

They took the car in and gave it the once over in the workshop, this is when they told me the noise was coming from the gearbox. They could not give me a quote there and then (this is concerning) so I'm waiting for the postman to deliver my quote.

Anyone else had anything like this? are mitsi correct, I mean the car has only done 71,000 /help

I had a V6-24 manual previously that started making 'orrible noises at 84K. Fortunately
I know the people at the mitsi dealer and he told me (very quietly) to take it elsewhere as they would probably charge about £1500 for a rebuild. He gave me the name of a
specialist "Gearchange" near Bridgwater they removed the Box, replaced dodgy bearing
and fitted new seals for £350. Beware............!

I got my quote through the post yesterday, Mitsi have quoted me £725 to re-condition the gearbox and replace the clutch (Price also includes labour) not half as bad as I expected.

Not a bad price compared to what I would expect from mitsu...

I got a recon gearbox and a new clutch on my Calibra. It was at an independant garage, and that cost £500 a good few years ago for a quite common (to say the least) drive unit. Hope it makes you feel a bit better.

A new one fitted is £1500, shop around.....
Mitsi will be unlikely to do this themselves and will probably farm it to someone they use in the area. Ask around and you might find someone to do it cheaper...

£750 seams low for mitsi to do it, don't be surprised if the price goes up.

pm mo (zedi1) for the price of a second hand box.

and if you live close to stoke on Trent i can change it for you at a lot less than mitsi will charge.

Mitsi quoted me £250 inc VAT to do the clutch and the same price to do the gearbox, looks as if mitsi have got their maths wrong!

Basically its the same job to replace a gearbox as to replace the clutch as they have to remove the gearbox to access the clutch plate etc. From memory its priced at 4.5hrs to do the job, i think!

I have just had mine reconditioned (it was totally mashed) – replaced the clutch and skimmed the flywheel (car has done 98K)

Mr clutch in Norwich – first quote £1600 finally knocked them down to £950

The reason I ended up with a price so low was because Mo (Zedi1) had a gearbox and clutch from a V6 with 40k (ish) and the garage had already reconditioned my box (rarer than rocking horse poo) – I requested the old box should be delivered back for part ex but found they were rather reluctant (mmmm) that’s when I found out.

They more or less held the car and box for ransom but wanted to do the work

Have a word with Mo – he might have the same box for sale

Otherwise bargain with the garage – you will spend a lot of money on this problem – I nearly scraped the car as a result.

Sorry to give you bad news I hope it all works out for you and your car

Or you could buy an FTO box that should bolt straight on, cheaper, easier to find, just the gearing is slightly different, and you will have to put it in the V6 bell housing

Car is now in to have the Gearbox and Clutch looked at (not mitsi a mate is taking a butchers) - to be honest I don't think the gearbox is knackered I came to this conclusion due to the fact that I can change gear everytime without fail.

The other factor is that when I apply the clutch pedal the rattling sound goes away (Thrust bearing..?) also under acceleration the car sounds like it's wheel spinning (squealing noise coming from either the clutch or gearbox).

To summarise:

In Neutral, 1st, 2nd, 3'rd (Awful rattle under hardly any revs) 4'th and 5'th (rattles but nowhere near as noisy)

Under load all gears make the rattling sound and start to squeal between 2 - 3k revs - squeal is less noticable in 4'th and 5'th.

Clutch engaged - silent even when revved.

****

Anyone fancy taking a wild guess as to the thrust bearing and/or whole clutch being buggered? Does this sound like gearbox trouble..?

At a guess i'd say input bearings shot, as said before, mine made noise throughout the rev range in all gears.

Same as mine - if only I had changed the thrush washers and bearings earlier – the damage has now been done – New clutch – skim flywheel – recon gearbox.

Don’t expect a lot of change out of 1K if you are lucky /Grrr

Right I got the news I dreaded - The gearbox does needs reconditioning (bearing gone) also the clutch plates and springs have gone so a new clutch is also required.

Just awaiting a quote for the clutch and geabox overhaul, gonna be around the £500 mark which isn't all that bad.

Seems to be a very common problem. Hordak was starting to show symptoms of this when I sold him (I did disclose this, before you ask!!).... Steve - How's that going? Has it got any worse at all?:inquisiti

Well - it's not got any worse!!!! I've been keeping my ears peeled. I was toying with the idea of getting the gearbox out myself as this seems to be the biggest bill, but will wait until it's a bit warmer!!!!
