as this has all leaked out i need to fill it back up ...

and then figure out which seal has gone

Sorry. Never done the job on a VR4. Most other cars I have done have been ATF.

Aye it is! I still have some of the red ATF stains on the floor where I stored my old power steering rack! :embarasse
