Three men stay over in a hotel. The cost for a room is £30 so they each pay £10 and retire to their room. Later that evening the guy on reception realises that he charged them too much and that their room should only of cost £25. He sends the porter to their room with the £5 they are owed. On the way the porter can't figure out how to split the £5 evenly three ways so he decides to give each of them £1 back and puts the left over £2 in his pocket.

This means each guest have paid £9 INSERT INTO post VALUES (3 x £9= £27) and the porter has £2 INSERT INTO post VALUES (£27+ £2= £29). Where did the other £1 go?

You're making the basic assumption that room still cost £30 when you do the maths of 3x£9 + £2 = £29. Whereas, the room only cost £25, so the maths is 3x£9 - £2 = £25. So, no missing pound ;) Good one, though :)
