View Full Version : Momo wheel

I'm not too keen on the steering wheel in my VR4 ~ the rim's just a bit skinny, even for my hands.

Having looked around a little, I found that one of my very favourite Momo wheels seems to be OEM on early Lancer Evos (version 2 or 3?) as seen in the photo below:

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the model name of this wheel is, which is making searching for one a bit tricky. However, I've PM'd someone on the MLR who's breaking such cars, asking if he has one available.

My question is, if he does have one, will it be a straight swap from Lancer to (7G) Galant, or will I need to source a different boss/adaptor?

Thanks in advance for any advice/expertise,
G

EDIT: ahh, never mind, I found this thread (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11116) and it looks like a straight swap will be OK. All I need now is to find out what the wheel is called...

Hi, dunno what the actual name of it is :inquisiti , but the wheel is standard on Evo 4/5/6, maybe earlier ones as well, with red stitching on the leather. It's also on some Galant sports, but with blue stitching, and some FTO coupes have 'em as well - anyone breaking Mitsus should know what you're talking about if you ask for a three spoke momo.
Think the earlier evos may have a similar wheel but no airbag?
Note most come with an airbag - if you don't need one, you might find a wheel with a blown bag and a half-decent centre cover (it will tear at the mounting points when the bag explodes) for a lot less than a fully working one.
I really fancied one, bought it, but compared to the full leather Nardi on the 8G, the feel and grip isn't as good - the 'proper' red/black momos fitted to the 8Gs along with recaro seats may be a different rim?
Looks a million zillion miles better than the Nardi tho'

I had a look at one for you when I was at Xtreme yesterday - couldn't see a name on the wheel unfortunately. As andy43 says, they're standard fit, so you should get one just by asking for an EVO momo steering wheel.

Got one standard in the Super VR4 with red trim.

If you can find a standard fit one for your generation I would imagine it would fit without a new boss-kit as they are factory. If you go for an aftermarket one however then you would need a boss kit.

Double check with someone in the know though :)

Cheers for the feedback.

I've done more digging tonight in Ebay and Auto Trader; it now looks like the OEM wheel in the Evo 1/2 was slightly different. The one in the photo was OEM on the Evo 3 and early Evo 4s, but there's some Evo 4s with an airbag, and they have a similar wheel but with a very slightly chubbier centre to accommodate it. Obviously bagged wheels wouldn't be what I'm after, seeing as how I have an old 7G.

Can't find any sellers on the Lancer Register (http://www.lancerregister.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=10) or FTO owners' club (http://www.ftooc.org/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=27&sid=86fc3ccfb2df49545ec254c86c6a3083) forums for now, so it looks like I'll just need to keep an eye out for a vehicle being broken. I'll probably try and grab the front Recaros while I'm at it. They look really nice, but gawd knows how much they'd set me back.

G

Here is my Legnum with the brand new steering wheel I got off Ebay for about £140.

As far as I know, they were fitted to Evo 4-6 and my 6 deffo has one, with blue stitching to match the Evo 6 seats.

It is a straight replacement for the Legnum Nardi thing, but the Legnum airbag cannot be used.

The new wheel in my Legnum has red stitching to match the car which I think was only in Tommi Mak Editions.

However I had to find the centre cap and airbag. Tried importing from Japan but the airbag is about £300 !

In the end I got the cap (used but good) and bag (unblown obviously) from Gaz at CPP in Congleton. He gets onto the MLR and saw my wanted ad. Also supplied the early Evo 3 instrument panel under my radio.

If you want a bare Momo wheel I have a decent used one for sale.

Its possible to source the airbag and cap, as I did.

I must say the wheel is more comfortable than the horrible Nardi thing it replaced, thicker rim with protrusions ( ooooh errrrr ) where your thumbs naturally sit. Also its a bit smaller than the Nardi which would look more at home in a bus !

Only annoyance is RSE have fitted it a bit off centre which is annoying when driving in a straight line. They will fix that when its next in for fixing the fiddly bits that aren't quite right.

I'll try to remember to measure it at the weekend.
