There definately is, you can also get manual v6-24's (2wd sedan with 6a13)

The 4 speed auto has it's gearing spaced quite far apart, I never liked th one in my car, I would really recommend you go for the manual or buy a 2.4 facelift viento, it has similar power and torque to the v6 2.5, but is available with a 5 speed auto and manual.

I assume a vr-4 is out of the question?

Thanks. Yep not after a VR4, although came close to getting another one after my old one was stolen but decided not to.
Not to keen on the viento as I am after 4wd and with the ST-r having all the VR4 features (apart from the twin hairdryers), it is the one for me.

Some later Vientos (like the Viento Type-X) are 4WD aren't they?:inquisiti

... with the ST-r having all the VR4 features The ST-R may have a handful of features but not all. The 4WD is not as good, no AYC,ASC and the twin hair-dryers give certainly enough power to carry the weight.

I once found it quite amazing that a 2.0 Cortina was more economical in the long run than a 1.3 or 1.6, because you did not need to rev so hard to get the same level power for a given speed.

Sorry I forgot about the AYC, ASC.

I think what you want to do is buy a VR-4 and put a GDI badge on it, and put 15" mags on it ;)

After selling the STR in December, and upgrading, i can say without a doubt that i wouldn't bother with another STR, the performance is embarassing compared to the VR4, as i guess you must know, but if you don't want a turbo wagon, i would personally go for maybe a carolla wagon, or libero? The STR really did suck up the gas for the performance, put your foot down, and it was all noise, and its almost as heavy as the VR4.

So, my humble verdict on the STR is:
1) uses too much gas/Grrr
2) frustratingly slow:zzz:
3) too expensive for what you get
4) not a VR4...

Interesting, well I'm not after major performance anymore as the days of being heavy on the right foot has diminished since there is 1 extra sitting in the back seat. I have had a Libero GT and the daily run about is a Corona Hatchback (not a corolla wagon I know) so been there done that had a hell of a good time.
The reason behind the St-r is, I like the Legnum shape but am not keen on the turbo maintenance bills & insurance. Its all about looks for me now, speed is not required:2thumbsup
