This weekend saw Nick, Tim, Kieran and I working in the bleeding cold servicing and rebuilding our cars.

Saturday began with me arriving late to find Nick and Kieran already working on getting Nicks engine back in the car, and Brunty making a tea

After a days work and lot of effing and jeffing we had the engine under the car but it justy wouldn't go in. It was around 5pm and Kieran called it a day with the promise to return on Sunday. As I was staying at Nicks for the weekend we carried on and low and behold before Kieran could have reached the Motorway the engine slotted into the first mount, a little persuasion later and the second mount was fixed, we then re-attached a load of bits'n'bobs (technical term) and Nick was positively radiant at the prospect of getting his car back.

We went in for dinner. Superb grub from Vicki, thank you.

Sunday we started on my car. After having a mare trying to reverse the bl00dy thing into Nicks garage, we jacked it up and started loosening bolts. Kieran turned up, and Nicks mate Tim. I cracked open the Amsoil goodies and we got to work. I was pleased to find that most of the fluids on my car were'nt in a shocking state, and everything was easy-ish between four of us to replace and refill. Although Nick was horrified at the luminous red colour of the Amsoil ATF, but he got over that.

Nick and Tim continued on his car while Kieran and I sorted my car and repaired the dump valve with was losing pressure (strange hissing noise?) via a damaged pipe thingy (technical term). This was done and my car was sorted

Things weren't so rosey for Nick though, his car was almost together and ready for firing up when neither Kieran nor I could manually turn the engine, it was rock solid. A bit of head scratching later and it was concluded that the torque converter was seated properly. :inquisiti engine out job, so Nick wasn't a happy chappy.

I've got pics which i'll upload when I get home from work later tonight, but for now I'd like to say a big thank you to Nick, Vicki, Kieran, Tim, Brunty and Don for the help, advice, facilities, scran, kit and gubbins provided. You'll be pleased to know I have NO TAPPETY NOISE AT ALL coming from my engine, the gear changes are smoother, the engine more responsive and the car feels quicker and tighter.

I'm sure i've missed bits out so Nick/Kieran, feel free to edit where necessary, as said i'll get the pics up as soon as poss, and leave you with my initial findings of the wonderfluid:

AMSOIL ROCKS!!

Great to hear from you Steve - I've been waiting for news about your car, particularly the ATF and the Coolant - simply because I couldn't accurately determine the level of either, even though I was sure we got it right. Looks like we did! :2thumbsup

Yeah, a good/bad kind of weekend, but enjoyable company (well, up untill 2pm when Nick always gets a bit stroppy/pan ) and we were looked after superbly by Vicky as usual.

Yes, when we were working around Nick's car, the air did turn a bit blue with the general amount of /Grrr and :smash: and /duh and /grr, not to mention the occasional :huh2: /dunce :idea2:

Steve - how did the power foam go then? I take it the kerfuffling didn't last?

Nick took over and sprayed it with quick short bursts while Tim tried to keep the car going. A few pops and bangs and it swallowed the whole can and spat all the sh1te out the back.

Nick must cut alot of grass in the summer to keep his neighbours sweet! My engine was screaming it t!ts off for about 10 minutes while we did that, and we didn't even get a curtain shuffle from next door.

I put down the tools for a couple of seconds to take a couple of photographs - this is what it looks like when CVR4 unite!

A big thanks to all who came and helped me. The few hours I put in on Steves car doesn't really properly repay him I'm sure! When I next get a few hours in the evening I intend to see if I can work out what I've done wrong. I have spent ages looking at photos and all I can think is that the TC has not sat on its shafts properly. I am desperately hoping that slacking off the bellhousing bolts will allow the TC to settle to where it shoud be and therefore allow me to bolt it to the engine. Fingers crossed!!

A special thankyou to Kieran who made the effort to come down two days in a row, going back for a dinner engagement on saturday night. A total of approx 6 hours driving to selflessly help people put their cars right. What a guy!! (Said in an idolising Ace Rimmer kind of way!)

I hope to be back up and running by the weekend, but maybe I am being optimistic. A couple of photos to follow courtesy of Mr. Brunt!

1. Where's the engine?
2. There it is!
3. How to raise the ride height!
4. If youcan imagine this photo zoomed in to the front bank of cylinders, you would be able to read the engine number on the block just below the end of the head.

Fingers crossed that you get it sorted Nick. Full up this coming weekend now so hope you can do it by yourself - if not and you aren't desperate, then you've got my number for another weekend. happy:

Steve's car is well nice and I am very envious of the Super VR-4 Bodykit and the extra-special dials - where the figures are, there's a gradiated fil effect around them and it looks superb. Very clean car underneath too - especially since it's been in the UK for some time. Looks like it was properly undersealed by the mitsubishi dealer on arrival, and they did a good job!

So anyway, Steve.... show us your pictures!!

Nick, how come your driveshafts are still in? - you put them back in? or remove engine with em in?

Nick Mann

Removed the driveshafts from the box and removed engine with box. Is that not the easiest way then?

Thought about this, then remembered the discussion on here a while ago saying it was pointless - so I didn't bother.

All looks very industrious. Wish I could work up the same enthusiasm for mine. My only concern, picture 7. Not sure who it is, but someone lying under the engine. Please, Please tell me there were axle stands somewhere or some other permanant fixture, not just supported on a jack.

Nick Mann
23-02-2006, 02:57 PM
Andy, don't panic! It is me under the car and I honestly don't have a death wish! The red you can see between my head and the bottom of the car is actually the base of a 6t stand under the near side front jacking point. There is another under the off side jacking point but it is off the right hand side of the photo.

Barry's comment about chocks is probably a fair one, but I'm not that bad!!

Andy, where are you? I could pop over for a day if you need a hand with anything. I don't know what i'm doing, but tell me once and I'll get on with a job.

23-02-2006, 03:27 PM
Cheers mate, I'm 41 miles to the east of you. It's not really that bad to be honest, but the cold is my problem, not the car!! I've taken a week off next week, to try and finish it so if you want to pop over, you're welcome. Not a lot left to do now, just the fiddley bits like wiring. Shall be out there in a minute, well, soon, anyway/pan to start piecing together the wiring loom.

/now where's my thermals, six jumpers, 15 socks, 3 pairs of trousers, and a huge space heater!
