After getting my car back to AYC ways.... I went out for a blat Saturday night..

I came up behind a boxter S... so after the rolling start at 50 mph through the speed camera .. we both blasted off...the VR4 running at .9 surged forward and surprisingly left the "S" behind up until about 80 -90 but then the enemy came back with some force.... luckily traffic/speed camera ahead put a stop to the *bad* driving before the difference in performance showed..

There were a few more sprints and both cars seemed very well matched from rest (which I was quite chuffed about), nothing in it... I need to go check the spec of the Boxster S :anxious: , I am guessing/HOPING its very similar power to the VR4... :D

I was wondering if any members with mapped fuelling / chipped / e-manage etc have seen much improvement in punch from 70ish upwards? my car seems to wind up fairly slowly even in 4th from this speed and seems to top out at 120 (on private test tracks *coff*) climbing v slowly (don't think the car is limited) ... I think NickM mentioned improvements in pickup with the fuelling sorted.. How much increased boost makes here, I am not sure.. Would like to try the same *experiment* with 1 bar

Any tinkerers care to comment?

New Boxster S's have 280bhp, RWD, top is limited to 155mph, 0-60 is 5.3.

A mate has one of these and as soon as the weather clears, we're going to have a play, so i'll let you kow how I get on.

Ahh right, that explains a few question I had

Yup wud be a good indication of how well your car runs . Mind out for licence confiscation issues tho! :anxious: That *could* be your first kill? :D

I found that the porsches' pick up from 80 upwards was quite rapid /Hissy

I've found that I need to drop down to 3rd for good pickup from 60/70. If i'm giving it some stick, I very rarely see 5th, 4th will hold over a ton and by that time i'm finding corners pretty quickly, so need to go down a gear or two depending on the exit.

I've mentioned before that my mates all have fast cars, usually when one of us gets a new car a video gets produced; this year, i've got a VR4, geoff's got a his poorcha, Al's got his busted Fiat Coupe, Mark should've finished his teg powered 306 and Stiff has bolted a mahoooosive turbo onto his BM 335.

So...should be a good video

Yup that should've been 4th from about 80-90ish..

Do you have your bullet cam ready for your film sounds like quite a line up... or will your mates be hangin out the passenger window with a video cam at 80mph? you shouldn't need to wait for the weather to clear/dry up :smug:

my brother in law has got a boxter s and Ive drove it i was very impressed

we've not gone head to head yet but id say the boxter will have the edge as mine is standard.

But he did drive mine and said that it was bloody fast, and I'd leave him standing in the wet.

All the camera gear is handled by a mate, Not sure what he's got, but i think between us we'll have some decent footage.

I am ready Pezz, but with a handful of RWD's in the mix they won't give it some stick in the wet i'm afraid.

I'm only worried by Marks 306 TBH, he's built from the ground up. It weigh's about 800kgs and has 220bhp, full rollcage, porsche brakes front and rear and some dandy suspension gubbins. Outright speed it'll be close, but through the twisties he might have it, besides, he doesn't give a monkeys if he loses it in a field, whereas I do!

Will (camera man) has a 944 Clubsport btw, so that'll be appearing too.

A pal is getting the Cayman S next week :anxious: That will be a close call should I rise to the challenge...

SO back to my original question.. anyone here with mapped fuelling care to mention the kind of improvments in mid range performance?

WildCards
28-02-2006, 05:02 PM
Cayman S: 295bhp - 0-60 = 5.4s. So yes, should be interesting.

Does a Dastek Unichip offer improvement? Or is that what you mean?

I know it'll give around an extra 30-40 horses, but does it make a real world difference?

Nick Mann
28-02-2006, 06:16 PM
A chip (unichip and emanage being the two that spring to mind) definitely improves performance substantially. Our cars fuelling is not set up well at all and controlling the timing and especially the fuelling makes a big difference. If a boost controller gives 30-40 bhp increase and the chip can give another 20-30 then if you have the money what are you waiting for? It is controlled safe power!! To give an example, my last VR4 would hit 130-135 on my private test track. This one hits 145. I know there are a few more mods on this one, but after driving it with no chip and then with the unichip fitted and mapped, trust me - it makes a difference!

Pezz - stop dithering and get an emanage sorted!!

The above figures are an educated guess only and definitely rely on the engine being able to breathe properly.

So much info has hit me in the last couple of weeks I can barely stand up. In the long term i'd love to up the car to around 340 - 350bhp as it sounds so easy and for relatively small cost.
But for now I need to concentrate on a banger otherwise Kate will brain me!

Thanks for the conflab Pez

All encouraging info Nick... Is pickup still slow from 100ish?

I just need to sort out where to install wideband sensor for I plunge head first into this...

I have the CAT back on (for noise reduction and MOT) but have an external baffle on my decat pipe (in storage).

Mind you, with decat I can use wideband sensor inserted into backbox, but need it before the CAT if CAT installed.

I don't understand these figures you all are putting out there, tbh, mine pulls like a barsteward through 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, not sure about 5th as the top of 4th gear is 140mph and I usually lose my bottle right about there :), that was at 0.6bar, and, now I am running at 0.72bar it is a tad stronger.

Nick Mann

Is yours a manual jakester? All three of my tips changed gear at 130 into 5th. 5th gear is where I think the power starts to seriously drop off. It starts lacking at the end of 4th. 110-120 is easy but 130-140 takes an age.

jakester
01-03-2006, 11:08 PM
Mine is a tip Nick, obviously things like this will always caus a stir, and, we know that speedo's are not a reliable source for speed :), but, mine always sits at 140 -141mph as it changes up into 5th, and, it gets there damn quick too......100 to 120mph is bloody amazing.

Good stuff, am sure I will hear you booting it around the roundabouts near me..

I may go for a blat later on... nice quiet road near me... will try and time a 40mph rolling start from 2nd and 3rd gear to 90/100.

The previous owner of Bals Leggie mentioned his car used to fly from 100mph upwards and felt power surge increase from 110-115.. so I have some investigating to do... :inquisiti

Have to agree here. On my private test track  the galant hits 140 on the button before changing into 5th. Its also a tip box but gets left in auto as im pretty lazy:happy:

I realise that in order to test 30 70 and 30 - 130 times I may need an assistant or a lekky gismo.. its a bit dangerous trying to time it whilst keeping eyes on the road and so will leave it till another time...

Getting the cable through the bulkhead could be a challenge for you then, the cable I have is about 1cm diameter. (bought in the maplins clearout bin, so rude to refuse the bargain..)

There was enough room in the grommet on the drivers side... Good luck if you try for the passenger side front wheel arch side!!!

The problem with all VR4's at that speed is 2 little things called TD03's. How fast your car feels is down to what the individual deems as being fast. Mine feels slow from 130 up but only in comparison to how hard it was pulling lower down. Also allowing the car to breathe alot more at this speed will also make a difference.
