And to my horror the 20hp INSERT INTO post VALUES (yes it went up after a serious thrashing!) I gained from the exhaust was instantly removed when I fitted a shiny new filter. :Ponder:

Pics to follow

OK some pics, firstly my shiny shiny shiny new air filter installed. I was gutted to see a 20hp drop in my power

Looks nice though! OK in true Blue Peter stylee INSERT INTO post VALUES (no really!) I thought I would address the problem. I figured my problem was that hot air was being drawn in to the filter as the ram effect from the stock ducting could not bridge the largeish gap. So I hunted high and low throughout the house for something suitable to bridge this monsterous gap. And I found............

Well obviously a Cherry Coke Bottle! Some sticky tape later it was installed and I took it for a blat. Result? A rather annoying 15 hp INSERT INTO post VALUES (more! 35 in total) drop and a funny wheezing noise :Ponder: :Ponder: :bawling: :headsc: After popping the bonnet I found out why!

My Blue Peter effort had been destroyed! My Turbos suck, they suck hard! :cool1: It seems that a conclusion can be drawn from this............the standard inlet from the bonnet lip is restrictive, it doesn't allow enough air through to keep the engine satisfied, hence the weedy coke bottle crushed under extreme suction. The only reason it satys healthy is that it is quite rigid. So with that in mind I have 3 options as I see it.......

Find something a bit more meaty than a coke bottle ;)

Replace the whole inlet with something somewhat larger

Stop fuc&*$g about with my car :nono: :D

Sorry to bore you all with my experiments :yakyak:, but I find it fascinating!

haha class. You don't want a coke bottle, you want nice strong baked bean tin. Then at least the wheezing noise would be understandable. :p :D

enigma
02-10-2003, 06:08 PM
I cant eat a tin of beans just for the sake of it! Besides, it would have to be a family size one!!!!!

I agree it is very fascinating! keep going!!

I'd never have thought the suction was that strong, especially to squash a coke can INSERT INTO post VALUES (even though they are flimsy)!

You could bridge the gap using a silicone connector like those from Samco.

Amazed to see such a larger drop in power too, maybe like some induction kit installs, you may need to reset the ECU and let the air flow sensor learn the difference in air flow.

enigma

Reset the ECU and everything! Unfortunately I didn't have any SAMCO hoses lying around. I am sure I will find something. Incidentally it was a Coke bottle rather than a can! :D

Maybe you melted it not sucked it to death.

enigma
02-10-2003, 08:03 PM
Nope, it was most definately sucked to within an inch of its life! :D Now theres a thought!!

I know this because it was only a quick blat, and it was cold when I popped the bonnet.

I think the bean can will be trialled over the weekend! ;)

Dave your experiments always bring a smile to my face ! :D

Hope you solve that one mate

Ah, slightly over looked that bit.. in that case it makes more sense it would suck the life from the bottle as the air entering the bottle isn't fast enough to give a constant flow, but there isn't much point telling you that since you found that out. :D
Still surprised by the amount of suction it has so I can understand why you attempted it. ;)

Perhaps take notes from this post: http://www.clubvr4.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1459 :D :D

baught the hks induction kit seems like i have to go hunting 1 day :D

Brind

Even if they don't add power they sure do make a lovely sound!!
With the HKS you can hear the recirculating dump valve doing its thing.

dont have that now :D been replaced with hks blow off valve

Hey Zedy, have you got any pictures of under your bonnet to post on the site?

need to get the engine washed before i take any pics its full off shi7 at the moment and the blow off valve is underneath at the moment need to sort some pipes out. INSERT INTO post VALUES (im getting as good as barry fixing vr4 now)

Oh.. thats alright I'll catch you at pod instead, I'm interested to see what you've done with your wireing as I've done a home made version of the 'Grounding Kit' H.7 did.
I am electrician by trade so all is well, I was just curious what your wireing looked like as I can't remember exactly what yours looked like at JAE. :)

Some gaffer tape is applied and it almost looks like it is part of the original car!!!!!!

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.hidle/images/Copy of InletMK20004.jpg

OK I lied! :D but it doesn't look bad!

The results, well it survived the blat up the road at least! But now for the numbers...........................

Well back up thankfully, I am only 5HP short of the maximum figure I have ever reached. This could be down to environmental conditions, road conditions, the amount of fuel I have in INSERT INTO post VALUES (full tank) etc etc etc. So I am quite happy. OK it is a bit down on the stock system, but it looks way cooler! I will continue with the tests over the weekend and keep you all informed!

For my next trick I will sort my boost controller out.......there must be 50HP in there somewhere!!!

Oh and I have just ordered some brakes which should cause rumblings at the POD!!!!!! :cool1:

I did some fiddling at the w/e.

With the boost controller that is. Going from .7 bar to 1 bar added on average about 25 hp and took around 1.5 seconds off the 0-100 mph time.

how do you convert ps to bhp

enigma
03-10-2003, 10:27 PM
Multiply PS by 0.9863 to get HP INSERT INTO post VALUES (approximately)

Hey bigdaveakers,

I've designed my own custom intake for my Legnum VR-4. I've written up a complete setup and install which Barry has put up on the website. If you were to give it ago it would be interesting to see what figures u get out of it?

I will probably be doing a similar thing soon, but not until I move the battery to the boot.........I will then go through the metal beneath the battery tray.........I already have my hole cutter, just need to get up the courage to start cutting!

I think that it will be better as it will have a less torturous route! Incidentally where did you get your MAF adapter and 100mm to 76mm cone?

-LegnumVR4-
04-10-2003, 08:32 AM
The MAF adapter came from a HKS Power flow filter INSERT INTO post VALUES (like the ones that some of the guys have here in there cars). The 100mm to 76mm cone was from a metal works place here in Kiwi land. U could just use a small plastic bucket or funnel and cut it down till it suits. I didn't want to cut into the body of the car as I had only had it painted awhile ago:)
