View Full Version : Anyone know what this might be?!

I've discovered a 12v plug in my ashtray and have no idea what it does!!! /help

There are 2 wires coming out of the plug. These run out the back of the ashtray behind the console somewhere, but I can't see them coming out inside the car or the engine bay. The plug is clear plastic and has what I reckon is an on/off switch on it.

I've tried plugging it in and switching it on/off but nothing seems to happen, inside or outside the car. I don't think there are any extra 12v sockets so I don't think it's a 12v extension lead.

Anyway, here are some pics - sorry they're a bit blurry:

Any ideas what this might be?

Pop the dash off and see where the wires go? its relatively easy - pop the trim off round the gearlever then pull the centre trim forwards.

Good plan, I'll give that a try tonight. I don't suppose you know how to remove the door from the tray just above the cigarette lighter/ashtray do you? I'm sure there's a coin stuck behind it somewhere and it's driving me mad!

Squeeze the metal lever bit at the top down to into the tray, and the whole lot slides out. Reverse to put it back. But it really is easy just to pop off the consol.

mpau, I think Mike is talking about the sunglasses holder. And I think that is release from the back of the console? If I have remembered correctly, then the console off could be a two birds one stone kind of thing.

Thanks chaps, all sorted now! :2thumbsup The 12v plug was for a funky little purple LED striplight mounted out of sight just inside the top of the glove box. I spose it's quite useful but I took it out anyway cos it looked a bit naff, especially considering it was secured with little "freezer bag" ties! /duh

Nick was right, it was the sunglasses tray I wanted to take out. Cheers for the thread link WODJNO, I followed bernmc's instructions and now there's no more coin rattling around in there! :happy:
