Anyone know what the 2.4 GDI is like with the vient aero trim?

My wife wants more poke (ooer!) that we are getting from the 1.8GDI, but I am not sure I'm ready to go to a VR4.

I've seen a nice 1999 on a jap import site for Y710k (which will probably end up around £5K I guess). Its done under 40000 miles and is the same colour as our 1.8 ST 4x4 so we will have a full set of spare panels!

Is the Vient a 4 wheel drive?

Cheers.

the viento basically means that it has the full body kit of a VR-4, it may or may not be 4wd, do you know the chassis code? EC1W would indicate 4wd, while EA1W would indicate 2wd.

I would suggest giving up on GDI completely and just going straight to a VR-4. The 2.4 GDI has a similar amount of power to the 6A13 non turbo, you could always ask a member with a V6-24 very nicely if you could have a drive of their car to give you a rough idea, but I think you should just get a VR-4 ;)

I think its the 2 wheel drive, the chassis code is EA3W - please correct me if I am wrong.

(the A is confusing me I thought that designates Europe-type vehicle)

Certainly you see the odd VR4 popping up for about the same price...not sure if they are guaranteed to be good. If Jakesters was an estate I would be considering.....

It's not worth paying £5k for a 1999 2.4 import when you can have a UK one for less than that. I saw a beautiful late 2000 2.4 with 54k on it for £3995 a couple of months back, and that was UK spec (ok, less powerful than jap spec 2.4, but won't get knackered by our fuel).

I like the fully spec'd imports, but I'm inclined to agree with you, Isaac. Imports are all very well at the right price, but not worth paying a premium especially with higher insurance, etc..

Grinder, if you dont want to go to the expense / cant afford a VR4 (like me), why are you so keen on a 2.4 GDI? The V6-24 is slightly more powerful, smoother and more common. Also I believe from what i've read its no more thirsty than the 2.4, mainly because the 2.4 has been tuned down to take into account our cr@p uk fuel! Plus engines spares will be "comparatively" more common compared to the 2.4.
Just my twopennoth. (I am SLIGHTLY biased!) Both good cars nonetheless.

trust me , those 2.4 things are way slower than the V6 , theres one in boston that has tried it on a couple of times with mine and lost miserably , and yes its a 2.4 not a 1.8

I've just had a thought about fuel quality and GDI engines in grey import cars. What say you put a tank of BP Ultimate or Shell Optimax in, reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery and then ran the car? The car would default to Japanese factory tune. Optimax is supposed to be very good, clean fuel. Why wouldn't you get maximum performance from the car?

We've only ever run our 1.8GDI on optimax (except for a short time on Tesco 99 which made the idle uneven) so I think its as good as it can be :(

Looking at a 4 door skyline at the moment, and we'll keep the Leggie as the Skyline is an older 'classic'; so the Viento idea is most likely on hold. :)
