I have been having the same problem as the previous tread with a noisey diff in the last 3 weeks with a new very loud road noise that a mech has said is the pinions in the rear diff. Not a good thing to here is that he just did one and it cost the guy 2grand NZ.
I had just put in the Ralliart Diff additive that has been said to be essential too.

Anyhow i'm selling the car and it couldn't have been a worse time for this to occur. What i am wanting to know is if an Evo 7 rear diff that is equipt with the same AYC and stuff will match up.

Also, if the evo 7 diff doesn't work will an auto diff go into a manual diff.

I don't know for sure if the diff will be interchangeable or not, what I can tell you is that EVO's, manual vr4's and auto vr4's all have differant ratios, so you won't be able to swap them straight in anyway.

Auto diff with AYCs (2001 auto VR-4 Type S) on my manual VR-4 (1997 5MT VR-4) works without any problems and they do have same ratios. Just check with caps before you buy one.

My friend has installed ST-R (Type V) rear diff into his AYCs equiped car (well it was until it broke)... his car is 99 auto VR-4 Type S. No problems there too.

I thought that the manual final drive was 4.111 and the auto was 3.684?

"An automobile uses gear ratios in both the transmission and the drive axle to multiply power. The two ratios multiplied together equal the final drive ratio."

Different final drive ratios on our cars are due to differences in gear ratios...

ahh ok, so the final drive ratio is in the transfer box then, and the rear diff is 1:1?

Close but not quite, there are quite a few rear diff's that fit the legnum and they all have a ratio of 3.312

There are quite a few part numbers for the rear diff, none of them match the EVO`s. However if you want to split one some of the internals will probably fit.

if you want me to check internal part numbers send me your chassis

The Chassis Number is: EC5W-0017814,
Don't think the evo one will fit at all plus the price on it is on the steep side were the auto VR4 diff is only NZ$200.

Has anyone else had diff problems with the VR4 Legumn running close to 400hp
?

According to what Valmes said the rear differential from the manual & tiptronic transmissions are the same, correct ? So they are interchangeable. What about the transfercase...can a tiptronic transfercase work on a manual transmission car ? & vice versa ? Why I ask, my son-in-law's tiptronic VR4 needs a transfercase & the only one we found here is from a manual transmission car.
Anyone ?
Thanks.

it must be the transfer case that has the differant ratio, so if you change it then your gear ratios will change.

snwmad, what mods have you done to get 400hp?

Mandrel Exhuast, E-boost controlla, all intrcooler pipes removed and replaced with mandrel bend pipes and Turbosmart pipe connectors, Large bar and plate intercooler,Pod filter and intake pipe. Blitz BOV, Iridium sparks and 8mm leads.runs around 14psi and i have a fuel cut defender that i've not yet put in.
Can't think what else.
Went to marshels transmitions today, they don't think i need a new diff, maybe a wheel bearing or pinion bearing.
I just want to get rid of the noise so that a can sell it.

I disagree, I think you'll have 350hp at absolute best :)

The diffs from IV, V, and VI's can be replaced with the RS diff or the diff from evo models VII onwards.
The VII onwards use the same crown wheel and pinion as the RS diff only it is fitted in an aluminium case rather than the cast iron case on the RS.
A regular evo VII diff onwards will fit.
You can easily spot an evo VII and onwards diff because the input flange has two sets of four bolt patterns to align with either propshaft type, where as a IV - VI diff has just one set of four holes.

Louis, are you talking about Evo diffs on to a VR4 here or just Evo diffs between Evos?

Depends if you talking from the flywheel or the treads i suppose. Needs bigger turbos and a computer. But that will have to come when i'm older and not studying.

I mean from anywhere on the car! 350hp at the engine is the best you could hope for with those mods
