View Full Version : carbon fibre bonnets

I am thinking of getting a carbon fibre bonnet. I have a couple of questions:

1. For the galant, I only see EVO style ones with vents for sale, are OEM look non vented ones available anywhere?

2. Do you need pins to mount them, or do some carbon bonnets come with OEM like mounting solutions? I would like to avoid pins if that is possible.

Oops, I should really post this question in another forum, please disregard it. Mr Admin, can you delete it. Thanks! :)

And as if my magic it is in a more appropriate place!

I don't think I have seen a carbon non-vented bonnet. Anyone seen one?

Why don't you want vents? They really help to get the engine bay a little bit cooler than it usually runs? You can also get a bonnet like mine which is completely differant to an evo style one and looks a lot better with the facelift style bumper as well.

Vents = Stealth Factor Zero.

yes you can get non-vented carbon bonnets without the need for pins

Well I found a non-vented CF Galant hood at the link below. It's from the US though (and requires pins), so I am not sure they'll ship to NZ and even if they did it'd be expensive to do so. I guess I'll have to keep trawling the likes of trademe.co.nz for one.

Possible group buy ?

This guy would be prepard to make a VR4 bonnet in carbon fibre if he gets enough orders.

I would think he can do vented and unvented versions.

http://www.smb-composites.co.uk/

But apparently he is having problems getting good raw material at the moment as British Aerospace are buying loads for the Airbus A380 wings.

Might be worth a try ?

Id be up for it, depending on price...

Ohh, and no-vents, vents are banned :)

Ohh, and no-vents, vents are banned

After seeing the heat coming out of the bonnet vent on my Evo when I stop at lights or whatever I am a bit concerned about heat build up under the bonnet of my Legnum.

I spoke to someone I know who works at Airbus and he has heard that there is a shortage of C/F material due to BaE buying so much.

I'm definately with you on that one Dream Weaver. One day I hadn't driven 5km before I could see heat waves at idle. They are a big help in our cars.

With the vented bonnet, I can actually see heat waves escaping from the bonnet. Lots of heat waves. Made a very big difference in underbonnet temps compared to a non-vented OEM bonnet.

What about different styles of vent apperture ??
Surely there must be a few out there that dont look like they came from an EVO ??

look at my gallery, I've got some pics of my bonnet in there. I think the curves perfectly match the facelift bumper, but it would probably look a little silly on a prefacelift car

Thats absolutely correct, Airbus has been responsible for the price of Carbon going up 100% in the last year. never mind the 50% the year before. There just isn't enough to go around. Quality carbon is needed for prepregs but that is about £40 per sq M now. Wet lay can use any cheap / Russian stuff thats about. People go for price and looks; 'real carbon' hasn't got the really shinny finish, you only get that if the mold has had resin put in 1st as a gel coat or if the component is clear sprayed after the event. Prepregs will not warp but wet lay can quite easily. As in all things you gets what you pays for.

This company (Carbongoodies) is on the Evo sites a lot, seems to have good products.

Done know if he has a bonnet to fit VR4s though.
