Just bought a 1998 VR4 Type-S facelift - fresh import to NZ (1st Owner).
After buying car, noticed a horid noise coming from front driveline. Took to a couple of 'reputable' mechanics in Auckland.
PitStop in Botany tested, inspected and gave a quote stating it was definitely the right side wheel bearing (complete replacement needed).
Albany Car Clinic tested & inspected and 'guaranteed' it was transfer case bearings and shafts shot, so would need to dismantle the entire front driveline and replace the shaft, bearings etc, etc - estimated cost $1800+.
Decided to take to Mitsubishi in Newmarket who tested and suggested it was just the tyres that had some 'scalloping'. So suggested new tyres and a full driveline service (just in case). Replaced tyres with new Eagle F1's (225/50/16) and voila...problem solved.
Although the cost of tyres and servicing still cost near the $1800 anyway, still ended up with the right advice and a new set of tyres.
Shows the quality of the cowboy mechanics around the place!!/pan
Pays to get more than 1 opinon and stick to the people who specialise in Mitsubishi.
