looking good :) Are you going to use the stock manifolds still and just route both of them to the turbo?

I should have that autronic wiring sorted out in the next few days btw.

zentac
27-04-2006, 12:13 PM
using 2 rear manifolds so we can route the pipework easier.

Oh wow! Go Rich!:2thumbsup

Obviously you're doing this to make it faster ;) - but in what way? Make it easier to get off the line (big single won't spool so quick)? More top end? And what power output or 1/4 time are you aiming for?

Nice to see it coming on so quickly - You did the sensible thing and waited for slightly warmer weather!! I'll never forget the cold of winter this year in my garage!! Good luck keep us posted. By the way, what is that monster you're fitting?

zentac
28-04-2006, 06:57 AM
Its the equivalent to a GT35/40R BALL BEARING TURBOCHARGER

.82 A/R EXHAUST

.70 COMPRESSOR

.82MM COMPRESSOR WHEEL CAPABLE OF .64 Lb/MIN AIRFLOW

OIL AND WATER COOLED

INTERNAL WASTEGATE @ 12 - 16 Psi

Richard, where do you get your turbo piping from? Have you got a selection of bends and straights, or are you bending it yourself - if so, what kind of bender do you have?

The pipe work came from the local powerflow place, they chopped two pipes into 3 sections each, bent them all 90 degrees and flared the ends so we could fit them all together.

Have you done anything to the internals, or are you just going to increase boost on the stock engine? What levels are you planning to run?

Stock engine at the moment, that will be the next thing.... the manifolds have been painted with black satin to keep the heat in. The rest will also be painted then wrapped with exhaust wrap.

It's looking great, have you considered running a cold air intake down in the bumper somewhere?

Wodjno
09-05-2006, 09:00 AM
 Looks good

Just one question on the heat subject again. Won't the heat generated from the Turbo melt the filter ? As Brad says, wouldn't a air feed to the bumper be an option. /Hmmm

zentac
09-05-2006, 12:41 PM
Why would it, its attached to the cold air side of the filter. I didnt think that side got that hot. (one way to find out!)

Sports GT
09-05-2006, 03:59 PM
I'm assuming you're gonna heat wrap all the piping seeing that after the air is cooled, it will only get heated again on its way to the manifold as it passes next to the turbo

to4garret
12-05-2006, 03:07 AM
just a quick note,

we had a *similar* air filter mounted directly onto the turbo like that, first full spool to 20psi and the foam was completly gone.

just something to be weary of. looking very good though. My single turbo never got very hot, in fact ran a lot cooler than with the twins.

Best Luck!

Eurospec
15-05-2006, 01:33 PM
Hello mate,

Dunno if you want to think about this.

We have a guy on the GTO board with a very big single. The heat generation is significant. He melted his shifter cables which sit some 8 to 9 inches (my estimate) away from the turbo. I dont know how close yours are, but i thought i'd just mention it.

Cheers,

Ben.

zentac
15-05-2006, 10:39 PM
cheers ben, Some of the Auz guys that have done this have also had a similar problem, thats one of the reason its as far forward as it is. Im taking every precaution possible not to melt anything. The exhausts are all double wrapped, theres a stainless heat shield in there, the selector cables will also be wrapped.... theres not much more I can do.

mpau009
15-05-2006, 11:29 PM
Its really starting to take shape:2thumbsup
Iv noticed a lot of the drag cars out our way have some variation of this setup, to keep heat in the turbo, probably not great for its lifespan, but versus melting stuff? If you have any issues, it might be an extra idea.

Sorry to jump in, but I'd like to add to the thread.
First off, nice conversion pal I wish I had time to be doing things like this,
Secondly insulating the exhaust as much will not only protect the surrounding components but will inprove the efficiency of the exhaust greatly. On our cars at work the whole of the exhaust is insulated right to the tail pipe to increase efficiency and overall increase performance. The exhaust turbine housing itself also has a heat shield to keep the temprature within the exhaust as high as possible up to (within reason + a saftey margin) the limit of the turbine blades.
As for wear on the turbo a ball bearing type turbo should not have a problem with the increased temperature and shouldn't even need as much oil flow to survive.

Anyway thats my 10p worth. Good luck with the project a hope it dosen't give to many problems.

my t3/t04b spools up at 2600rpm so Richard's GT35 will probably spool up around 3200rpm. Traction is going to be his problem as having spooled up, the increase in boost is very very quick!!!! I reckon that the increase in power he will have between 3200 & 4200 will take a while to master through the first three gearchanges.

Took it for its first trial this weekend. Unforuntaly on Friday the actuator that held 1.1 bar all day long bust, so I had to run one that only held 0.4bar. The boost controller struggled to compensate for the weak actuator and it struggled to get up to and hold 1 bar.

Never the less it was a good first run out, consistantly low 13's and even dipping into the high 12's with NOS.

An encouraging set of results - certainly on a par with the Twin times, and more to come - bloody frustrating about the actuator tho!

Very good results so far!! What time did the opponent do in video 3? And what happened in video 6?

Impressive stuff! I am looking forward to seeing numbers after you have got it settled down and running properly. :2thumbsup

Especially considering that it is only fwd, I bet his 1/8 mile times are terrible compared to ours!

I thought it was close! And after his big burn out too!! Good luck with the fine tuning. I would imagine 12's without NOS are looking possible now?

Great work so far!
:2thumbsup R&D!

PS: Just to let you know my car is ready too... ;) every bit is in place, hope to get it timed on June 24th. We will have a Drag Racing event with an electronic timing system, on a Drag strip... well sort of... (pic below) 200 km down South from my city. Hope I don't break that thing until then! :D
