Steering rack

We may have been here before, but if so i missed it. My 100,000 mile 2.5 wagon makes a sort of rattling noise from the front end, especially when on left hand lock and going over bumps. Having had a good waggle and pry I have established that the only play is in the rack. I have a service disc and it tells of tightening up a 'rack support', which is the bit on the bottom of the rack that looks like it needs a huge allen key to fit it. The disc doesn't seem to say why you might want to tighten this up though. Has anybody come across this and fixed it, or am I going into unchartered waters. P.S. Hi BDA.

Other problems with the steering racks have included the ends, which can be changed independantly. Could try a search on it? Try narrowing to just posts made by HJM, as I think they are one of the previous sufferers!
