Non specialist mechanics.

What is the general feeling about taking our VR-4s to non specialist mechanics? Is it a bad idea because they're too complicated?

In a prior German car owning life, I used to take my BMW E39 540i, which was a pretty top spec performance car to the nearby Ford Dealer for oil changes, WOFs and even the odd electrical system repair. It was cheaper than the BMW dealer and very convenient to where I lived. I seemed to get quite good service. I'd reset the service lights myself with a wire coat hanger.

I think it'll depend on what you're wanting done....oil changes, WOFs are pretty straight forward and most Joe Blog Garages can do this, however I'd recommend sticking with specialist places for things like cambelts, clutches and the like.
I've found that Mitsi dealers aren't too pricey when it comes to servicing, plus on top you can be assured (touch wood) that the job is done right, first time!

you could also do what im doing, from the looks of things over there you have some club member who now these cars well

We found an excellent Mitsi Mobile mech up here and we stick with him. Sure you can do oil changes yourself if you want to but Mark has spotted other little things we wouldn't notice and sorted them before thay become an issue.
Small water leak, loose bits and pieces and his feed back re how the cars are is valuable. Even told me off cos I 'burnt' the AYC fluid and he knew I'd been hooning it on the beach with big donuts ( cos he dug all the sand out from underneath as well ,,,)

I would not trust a general mech to do more than oil changes etc and even then I would specify the oil to be used and probably watch him put it in. They have been known to charge for 'the good oil' and use cheap stuff.

Theres nothing special about the VR4 engine, its like any other engine. Any compitent mechanic can do the cambelt, change a clutch etc.... hell even I can do those.
