Can anyone confirm whether my dads keys are the transponder flavour or not. He got got two TOAD alarm fobs and one ignition key, the ignition key is identical to mine, and identical to these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-MITSUBISHI-KEY-BLANK-GTO-3000GT-PAJERO-GALANT-ECLIPSE_W0QQitemZ4646958440QQcategoryZ10400QQrdZ1Q QcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting) but the chaps at Mitsi reckon it has a Transponder in it and want to charge a fortune for a new one.

Also, if he buys the blank keys in the link above, will any key cutting shop do them, or do I need a shady back street place?

Cheers

I think mine is the transponder flavour, which is the one in the pic. You can see the button for the central locking on it.

Hope that helps a bit.

What was the quote by the way WildCards. Been looking at getting a spare as this was the only one I got with the car.

The range on it seems to be getting much less too. Could need a new battery. /Grrr

was talking to an alarm specialist, and if you can make out a very small black square nxt to the metal on the key, that is the transponder, well so he said (sorry bout the pic tried to get as close as poss)

why do you need the transponder key??
doz you car alarm not unlock the doors?

my alarms hooked up to the central locking...
i have my transsponder key in safe keeping, and just use a normal key and alarm remote.

Yep - even the 'official' UK ones are transponderless - Car theft isn't a big issue in Japan, hence lax security - the only techie bit is a radio transmitter for those with remote locking.

Ha ha! Yes mitsi wanted over £200 for new key for my '96 Legnum/Grrr so got one cut at the local Mr.Minute for a fiver. Didn't work at first so back to the shop to get it 'adjusted' and now works fine:2thumbsup . Seems to me the transponder becomes redundant if you have a decent alarm fitted so no point lining the local dealers pockets! Newer models may be different of course!

After reading this thread i bought some of the blank keys from ebay. From a bloke in Hong kong, 99p for two £2 P+P took them to Timpson, i told them jap imports (legnum's) don't have transponders and they cut them for me £5 for two keys, they work perfectly. What a result!!!

Big Thanks Guys Saved me a fortune, and i hope many other people. Great thread.
Thanks Dave

word of advice, which i got from the bloke in the shop. when you get the keys cut make sure they look the same as the original before leaving the shop. pay close attention to the end of the key to make sure it is fully trimed and rounded. any exesss left on the end will stop the key from working, but a good key cutter should check this anyway. If you do have a little nodule left on the end you can and it does not work, gently file it off to make it look like the original and this will make the key fit.
hope this helps
