View Full Version : I Envy You All!

Hello there fellow diamondheads.. and greetings from Norway!

I am the proud owner of a Mitsubishi Galant GLX , born 1997. It is my pride and joy, and I can honestly say that I love this car. The feel, the look and the way it handles is enough to make me blush.

And the GLX was the only thing I could afford..

My absolute dreamcar is actually the VR4 sports edition.. but this car will cost me 42644 £ if I want it standing outside my house with Norwegian license plates. Not that the car isn't worth it, I just don't have that kind of money to spend on a used car.. and yes, the mentioned price is for a used VR4 from 1996 that has quite a few miles under its hood.

One day, I will buy a VR4.. one day. For now I am spending my time building the GLX, adding a few "modifications" such as: carbon hood, complete bodykit, spoiler, racing mirrors, VR4 headlights and more. Too bad VR4 headlights are all manufactured for right-hand drive, making them illegal in Norway.

Norway is the worst place to buy a car, and owning one here is just as troublesome. I ENVY YOU ALL!

P.S
I have 879 unique pictures of Galant 8th generations from around the world, so if anyone would like me to create an online gallery, please let me know by replying to this post.

P.P.S
I will be posting pictures of my car soon, from 100% original to.. well, I won't ruin the surprise.

Welcome to the club. It is such a shame the authorities over there make things so difficult, is it like that for all powerful cars?

Of course we would be glad to see all of your pictures, it is always interesting to see what others get up to.

Welcome to the club. It is such a shame the authorities over there make things so difficult, is it like that for all powerful cars?

Of course we would be glad to see all of your pictures, it is always interesting to see what others get up to.

Unfortunately, the authorities are strict as hell when it comes to all cars.. especially with cars that have more than 100bhp.

Basically, if you want to do anything besides buying an original car straight from the store, you're in for a rough ride through the Norwegian rules and regulations.

The coppers over here will basically stop anything that looks modified, even if you just changed the rims.

I wish I was exaggerating.. but I'm not.

I also lowered the hoodlock after these pictures were taken.. so now there's no gap between the headlights and the hood..

Maxpower photographed the car this weekend, so that was nice. Maybe I'll end up in a magazine or somethin' .. ;)

As for the engine, I am SERIOUSLY considering buying a VR-4 engine and converting it to RWD. Make a little drifter out of that family sedan.

how long has it taken you so far to do what you have done already to the car and how much?

It took about 1 week in total workload, but of course ordering the parts I needed took a "bit" longer. Also, some of the modds I've done were done one at a time, at random from when I started 'till present.

I payed 7 538,95 £ for the car when I bought it, and I've passed that ammount in styling it.. so yeah.

And yeah.. suicide doors or lsd lambo-doors would be cool. I might just do that. :)

That last photo shows parking-lights only, the main light shines much brighter.

Now, all I need from you guys is to know if there are any differences in the chassis from the VR4 and my car.. for example, if I were to change the engine and drivetrain, would I need to strenghten something on my car? Or would it be a clean swap?

Thanx for reading, take care.. ^^

Putting in a VR4 engine can be done, not easy, though by the amount of work you have done already, that shouldn't worry you. The Four wheel drive though would need major surgery to the floor pan. I run mine with VR4 engine and Front wheel drive. Very exiting drive!!!

Actually, I was thinking more in the lines of replacing the exhaust with the 4 wheel drive, and putting the exhaust outlet behind the front tires.

I don't think I will get the car approved with VR4 front wheel drive.. ;)

Wasn't this particular car debated ages ago when it was up for sale - about it being a pre-facelift model but with post facelift features (facelift bumpers etc) fitted. It was the pre-facelift bonnet that gave it away?

Or am I mistaken?!

Congratualtions on the car, by the way!

Yes, I remember this car. What got me (and still does!) is the 320bhp claim. What's it had done to it?

Ethelion
10-11-2008, 06:01 PM
I was mainly looking for a manual VR-4, in good condition.. that had the facelift front. I was pretty excited when I found this one, and even though I knew that the stock bhp should be 280, and that it should have a pre-facelift front, I bought it just for its manual gearbox.

I picked this baby up friday, and have been driving it all weekend.. and I must say it feels awesome.

My mates are automechanics and have checked the car inside out.. and they found nothing wrong with it.

So I feel pretty lucky getting it at a bargain £3800.. /Devil5

The type v manual Galant was a lot cheaper. The original prefacelift price for a manual was 2.98 million yen, the facelift type v manual was 2.64 million.

If you wanted a facelift type s manual you could still buy Legnums at 2.975 mil, or of course buy an older Galant.

Haha, yeah.. I've only been driving this monster for about three days now, and I've burned out a full tank of petrol already.

Anyway, I don't mind the milage on the VR-4, it's a small price to pay for such a powerful experience.

Maybe the previous owner bought and installed the facelift himself?

What happens in the UK is that cars are sometimes registered with the incorrect year - It happens quite often. Sometimes it is accidental, sometimes a car is given an 'older' registration plate to avoid the ESVA test (which a lot of Japanese Imports won't pass).

Yeah, my chassis number looks like that first one, only with 5 numbers after the 02.. "EC5A 02XXXXX".

I also heard rumours about WinCAPS being outfaced, and replaced with another Mitsubishi Parts Catalogue, called "ASA", but I haven't confirmed it yet.

I think the WinCAPS I downloaded from DSM is a 16-bit version, so I don't think it will work on my 64-bit Vista..?

Thanx for the reply Brad, I've managed to install ASA now, so all is well. :)

I also managed to get myself a membership, so now I can update my profile with pictures of my new baby.. ;)

Hm.. seems like I could use some help from you guys.

Do all of you have EEC / COC documents for your cars? I can't seem to find any..

Thanx!

I'll try to take some more pics of the sides, maybe some macro ones to show the details in the paint. There's actually a pinstripe and shadow around the entire car, in addition to the "tribal"-pattern.

The hood is painted carbon with some pretty neat details.. I'll try to get some pics of those as well. :)

I could mention that I've also swaped the engine, drivetrain and so on. Now my baby's running on juiced VR-4 power, with extra goodies such as a custombuilt, stainless steel exhaust-system, LHD conversion, new plugs accomodating the modest boostincrease, and so on.

Still, there are more to come. /rally
