Wot's this thing (http://www8.cds.ne.jp/%7Etyoshi/car/tips/m_c_s.html) do then?

Stops the brake master cylinder moving when you hit the brakes hard.

Isn't it you Bern, who tells everyone off for asking questions before searching? ;)
Since you are a good bloke though, I thought I might help out... Maybe your google is broken :P

Due to the high forces exerted against the bulkhead under braking, the Cusco Master Cylinder Stopper bolts upto the end of the master cylinder and vastly reduces bulkhead flex which in turn leads to a better brake feel. This product should be used in conjunction with braided brake hoses and good quality fluid.

Cheeky bleeder. I may have to hurt you - you're lucky you're so far away !
I understand the principle, I just can't see how it does anything - that piddly piece of metal? The cusco job in your link is much more substantial than the thing PoPo has fitted, and look at how his is mounted....???

Yeah, I do agree with you about the one in the pic you linked... Doesn't look very strong. I expect his is mounted on the strut tower? Thats the only way I can see it actually being of any use.

I can understand the concept though, as jamming the brake must be putting a lot of force on the master cylinder, which is attached to the bulkhead. any flex in the bulkhead WOULD cause some loss of brake feel. (Though I would have thought it to be minimal, unless your bulkhead is bloody flimsy)

In addition, I wonder if attaching to the strut tower is a good idea too... as if that flexes... wouldnt want to break your master cylinder :P
