Hey guys, Im a friend of Rhys INSERT INTO post VALUES (-LegnumVR4-) and also a new member here. I own a 97 VR4 Galant Manual so its good to find a VR4 forum.

Just for people who wonder what these cars do down the 1/4 mile, I took mine out today and did 13.830 with just an Exhaust INSERT INTO post VALUES (5Zigen) 3inch INSERT INTO post VALUES (facotry extractor from the turbo).

Im looking to put an Electronic boost controller, K&N and a bigger extractor to give my car more flow :)

Anyone wants to have a talk feel free to message me, otherwise I hope to chat more on this forum.

C ya

Dan

Hi there.

We tried the VR4 up the quarter just after we got it.

Average time was about 15.5, but that was without trying that launch technique mentioned somewhere else on this forum ;)

I tried both Auto and Tip, but the times were the same.

The car is totally standard, so I was ok with the result.

Dave.

Measured on the quarter mile strip at Crail.

:Ponder: by counting in your head? stop watch, normal 1/4 timing equipment? rough geuss :Eek1: :D

fair dos, i should have said how were both runs timed.. :nervous:

Normal qarter mile timing gear, christmass tree lights etc.

To be fair the 15.5 times were measured on a day that the print outs provided to everyone at Crail where mince.

I watched the timing gear on one of the runs and saw a 13.97 which I reckon was more accurate than the 15.5's based on the other cars racing and the times they normally get.

We will need to go again on a day the timing gear is actually working and get proper times recorded ;)

Thanks for the welcome guys,

PetrolHead: your car was auto so they are not the factory 280hp like the manual. So yours would be a little slower than mins to start with anyway. Plus with auto did you try holding your left foot on the brake and right foot on the excellerator for about 2 seconds before you took off? It will help.

BriandG: Mine was timed on a proper race track with all ellectronic lighting and lasers down the track etc. Told me my 60 foot time, reaction time, 660 foot time INSERT INTO post VALUES (Half way); MPH and then Final time. So it was accurate :)

:cool1:

Jap data sheet for jap VR-4 states power output of engine is 280 bhp - auto box will sap some of that, so power at wheels will be less than manual - or so I understand

We have the car booked into a Rolling Road day next month, so should get accurate figures on how much an auto box saps up....

Will no doubt post figures once we have them!

I RR'd mine and the measured losses were somewhere about 60bhp - very low for a 4WD, let alone an auto.

Don't place as much faith in the 'manuals are more efficient than autos' argument as I used to.

This was proved by leaving the rolling road and a manual GT4 celica struggling to keep up with me, despite having a much higher flywheel figure, but a v similar atw figure.

Welcome to the board GalantVR4.

What is this trick for quick getaways using an auto box then??

BriandG, what is this pipage for your induction you speak of? what is the price for it, I'm really interested in getting cold air to my filter as mine is just bolted on like yours..

Rhys sent me some info on it, and kindly wrote a "how-to". i have pictures etc.. im just rewritting the code for the info section, to accomodate for this.. plus future expansion.. im nearly there now. its just about done, just getting it ready. few alignment issues..

should be here by tomorrow :D

Okay excellent, looks really good.

Hope I can do that, at the moment I've got a proper UK sized battery taking up most of that corner... just curious how he managed to get it down there, not sure I can?

Are you keeping your HKS and fitting it on the end of that pipe?

Hold your left foot on the brake and right foot on the accelerator right to the floor for about 2 seconds INSERT INTO post VALUES (the revs should go up till about 2000 revs then drop your brake, INSERT INTO post VALUES (drop your left foot sideways so the brake goes out really fast) then your away, and your keep your right foot down to the floor the whole time :)

As for the cold air intake, Im goign to do that on mine INSERT INTO post VALUES (luckily I have Rhys who lives about 15 minutes away from me) Im going to setup mine similar to his down in the front left hand side with those nice aliminium pipes. Dont put it near your engine otherwise with the heat that these cars produce your getting not increase in power at all, jsut a nice racing sound :)

Cheers for all the welcomes too

Yes Dan that is the correct way to launch the auto's, just don't hold it down too long, the torque converter is taking a whole lot of hp as u hold the brake down:)

I managed a 14.428 that day with Dan.

My 60ft in 2.036sec

Heres the Video footage of me and Dan racing each other:

http://www.2extreme.co.nz/mitsubishi/movies/DanvsRhys.mpg

As for the filter u need to have a smaller battery or u shift it to the boot. 'Note to myself' must write that into my install guide for the intake:D

I've pasts most of the info to Barry so he will sort it out.

Because of the climate here, we cant use the small japanese battery for long. On both VR4's ive had, the battery died and had to be replaced with a larger one within about 2 months of having the car :INSERT INTO post VALUES (

the MAF is "flexy" so theres is some room to play with there, ill see how I get on when i do mine..

-LegnumVR4-

My battery isn't a Japanese battery, it's bigger. You may just have to put another bend in the pipe if u really need to have a bigger battery. Make sure u can get the ATF dipstick out too:)

-LegnumVR4-
28-04-2003, 08:22 PM
Oh yeah make sure u don't push the MAF flexy over to much to the right, it will stop u from installing the turbo intake pipe if u wish to have something like that in the photo. Vey limited space to get the 90deg's in there.

Cheers for the quick launch trick.

I may not bother replacing the other pipe with ally, but I am going to move the air filter which is just bolted to the air sensor at the moment sucking up all the heat under the bonnet, fitted by Ralliart aswell! they didn't even retain the old feed pipe from the original filter box.

Picture: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mark.brindley1/VR-4.Engine.2.jpg

How can we get hold of ally tube similer to that here?

I just went to a place that deals in bending pipes - exhaust builders etc. Ask around, thats what i did:thumb:

All Im going to do is take my car over to Rhys's house and ask him nicely to do everything for me :)

Then pay him for the job at the end.

Nice and easy aye Rhys :cool1:

Hey GalantVR4 and Legnum VR4, please post your time slips. It would be interesting to see all that information.
I have timed my 5sp.manual VR4 once at the track but only the reaction time, mph & ET were working, so I don't know my 60 ft time.
Here is my info from my three runs : 14.189 @ 93.36 mph
14.168 @ 93.16 mph
14.243 @ 93.75 mph
My car just has a K&N drop in filter & TurboXS MBC set to 11psi for those runs. Temperature at the track was about 35* Celsius. INSERT INTO post VALUES (I also noted the outside temperature from the AC display ranged between 35* & 40* Celsius.) Trinidad is hot ! I have a buddy with an auto VR4 who has done some mods, HKS intake, custom exhaust, GreddyEBC at 15psi, using Toluene as an octane booster and has run 13.8 several times.
Keep us updated with your mods and experiments. BTW, I have a brother in New Plymouth, NZ who used to have a VR4 but now has an Audi S4, which he says is faster !

I have a 7G VR4 INSERT INTO post VALUES (6A12,2.0V6 TT) that I also timed previously.
60ft 1.873 - 13.826@ 97.19. similar temperature.
The 7G VR4 now has a 6G72 dohc tt engine & gearbox and so far I have only managed a best of :
60ft 1.980 - 13.427 @ 100.90
60ft 2.111 - 13.535 @ 100.45

Hey Edmund VR4,

Mine is a 97 VR4 and only had a exhaust, from the middle not the extractors.

60 ft: 2.067 INSERT INTO post VALUES (I did a a 1.996 but missed 4th near the end)
mph: 100.22mph
et: 13.830

I feel I could have got 13.7 but only had 4 goes and twice missed 4th. But wasnt too bad for my first time on the track.

My next mods are going to be K&N, extractors, adjustable boost controller INSERT INTO post VALUES (to 13psi); then that will prob be it for a while.

Oh yeah temp was pretty cold, Im guess 15 degreese.

-LegnumVR4-

14.428 @ 94.33

Best reaction time 0.657

Best 60ft: 2.036

Filter, exhaust, boost at 13psi.
