What year galant you got? i didnt know that you can get air con and not climate control..

It is 1999. I took it to a Mitsi dealer as the outside air temp was ether 20C or -30C to be told it wasn't climate control. So I asume it is Air con instead. However, when the outside temp is supposidly -30, the air con tries heating the car up unless I turn the required temp to its lowest setting - then it gets too /JawDroppi cold. this behaviour doesn't sound like air con to me.

does it look like this??

Thats climate control ^

Same as except for the wood venier trim and the phone holder is erricson.

So if this is climate control then I'm hoping the problem is the outside air sensor.

are all your buttons around the little display all working buttons or are some blanks?

All working. Front & rear window demist. Can control the speed and flow paths. The eco and auto modes both work and the cooling follows what is set on the dial. However, when i select the outside air temp it is always 20C appart from when it drops to -30 (which hasn't happened recently).

Think it is the sensor (or missing sensor) as there is an empty socket behind the front grill. However as Mitsi say this car hasn't got climate control they arent prepared to even try fitting a sensor /wall /wall. hopefully getting one from MJR http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18152 if he can locate it.

Your Mitsubishi Dealer is talking Bo!!ocks. That is climate control, and if the front temperature sensor is missing, that will cause the fault you describe.

Which dealership is it? And what exactly did they say?

steve190

Was actually 2 dealers

Western Mitsubishi
11 Edinburgh Road
NEWBRIDGE
Midlothian
EH28 8SP

and where the car was first registered

Phoenix Mitsubishi
Phoenix Retail Park
Linwood Road
Paisley
PA1 2AB

both said the same thing, that it is not fitted with climate control, and that they would have to speak to Mitsi in Japan and would get back to me. Guess what, neither bothered.

Steve normal AC doesnt have the wee screen - u must have climate control. could be the pipe behind the centre fascia???

btw pheonix are a particulary crap dealership......

steve190

Pipe?

Where does this run from to? And what size am I looking for? What does the pipe do?

Nutter_John

There is a flexible pipe attached to the back of the unit in the dash - this takes the inside temp reading so that the climate control can work .

remove the center console and you should be able to see it

Before I start pulling the car to bits. How would this affect the outside air temp being either 20C or -30C. With the outside temp at 20C the temp can be controlled using the dial, but obviously it is in relation to a fixed point.

Steve you asked about the pipe mention above your post - thats what my answer relates to

Just found the invoice from Western Mitsubishi, 1 April 2006 and no reply.

Invoice states that it is the outside temp sensor that is faulty. They also wouldn't fit a new replacement as the car isn't fitted with climate control :speechles . So they can diagnose a fault but not fix it

Off to check a pipe now.:anxious:

Update: Can't get radio out so can't remove centre console. However there is a socket behind the front grill with nothing in it. Maybe the sensor is missing? Hopefully MJR has one that wasn't damaged in his shunt.

You shouldn't have to remove the radio to remove the surrounding console. Just start at the bottom around the gearstick and the rest comes off easy.

Radio is a Philips RC599 which is wider than the hole in the centre console. Looks like it needs some sort of fork arramgement (2 holes on either side) to remove. Does the sunglass holder come out with the centre console?

Hi Steve

Yep when you remove the center console the climate controller and the glasses holder are attached to the plastic . The only thing that should stay in place will be your radio

I get you, same as my my head unit, i need to take my head unit out casue it over laps the console.

Once you have taken the headunit out its a matter of pulling the console off. Remember the gear suuround needs to be taken off first.

No the sunglasses holder doesnt come off with the console, u just need to open it to move the console off. the sunglasses tray is easy to take off, its just on clips.

you might only have to remove the head unit surround...

also check the plugs at the back for the ac control unit,
i left one sitting loose once and it would do weird things like say the outside temp was -30 on a hot sunny day

Nextdoor neighbour had the required tools to remove head unit - now out. Centre console is loose and the control unit has a flexible pipe connected behind the temp contrial dial leading down to the blower. There is also a multi-pin plug plugged into the back of the control unit.

So that looks to be connected correctly then - Well, that's that out the way!

Think attention must turn to the missing sensor from the front of the car. I'm still speechless that your Mitsubishi dealership told you it wasn't a climate control system.

OK. Will put it back together tomorrow. Does anyone have a part number for the sensor.

This is the only info I have on the sensor - which I cannot find at in the area shown, however there is a socket with nothing plugged in.

Sorry I couln't let you know of the result of fitting the sensor, only fitted it today, spent the last few days in Aberdeen.:furious3:

Anyways

it works :2thumbsup
Tested it with my ifrared heat gun and it is accurate to less than 1degree./GJ
So many thanks to MJR for this and no thanks to the supposed experts at the Mitsi dealers

Great news.

Maybe a trip back to the Stealership is in order, so you can give their service manager a good dressing-down?

Just in case you're interested, this is what the dash looks like in cars without climate control (and a 4 cylinder engine...):

I have found that Mitsui more often then not speak a load of bull sometimes. I was told my car doesnt have air con when it does. I was told my car doesnt have pollen filter when it does. They just read whatevers on their screen. They dont even know what size brakes the galalnts have.

Can anybody tell me where I can get the wood trim from???

As in this picture > www.askisaac.com/images/car/dash2s.jpg

Also, as per title, is it possible or hard to change from air con over to climate control?
