I checked with Mo when mine broke - he was out - and then [after a long search] got one for £750 from Nippon Spares

That's about double what I was thinking. Won't be buying from them unless the worst comes to the worst - would be just about scrapping it at that cost.

yeah, I was getting quotes around £1200 - £1400 to strip, rebuild & refit a box, so if you can get it done for £500, go for it (& that might not include the labour cost to extract & refit the box.)

Do you know what went wrong? That might change whether you're happy to rebuild a box - mine had (apparently) a violent enough break to shatter the casing - after that I wasn't sure what else might have been damaged. So I went for a low-mileage replacement.

Mo would have sold me a box at the kind of price you're looking at - but didn't have one.

Pezza had one a while ago. Don't know if he still has it.

Try Japco www.japco.co.uk or www.ricerocketuk.co.uk and get either a 4 or 5 speed FTO box they will both fit.

Cal -What's happened to the existing box? Bang and then a loss of drive?

The V6-24 autobox is notorious for stripping it's input shaft and torque convertor teeth.... JPAT can advise a good repairer in your area.

Thanks for all the replies.

My brother was driving it, on a tour of Scottish West Coast with his outlaws. Crested a hill taking it relatively easy at 50 - 60mph then nothing - no real bang or anything (apparently - second hand info). He put it into Neutral and coasted to next layby. Shut off, checked fluid levels and for external damage and nothing showing so started car and tried to select D and R.

Nothing. He said it does seem to be idling higher than normal, as if there's no torque convertor load on it.

As I said, no external damage showing, the mechanic dad uses has had it up on the ramp.

Kieran - what's JPAT?

Zentac - good to know about the FTO boxes - thanks.

I did have the code form my dad - but it's at home and my wife's gone out! I'll post them up later.

mackays in paisley sounds like it could be useful...but would rather get a straight replacement as a first option.

£1900 quoted by mitsubishi!

Cheers,

Calum

Japco says all FTO boxes are tiptronic and not sure how that would work with regards to ECU/ shift selector mechanism?

Cal - Jpat are a company specialising in supplying parts to transmission rebuilders. They don't repair transmissions themselves, but can advise an 'approved' repairer. The reason I suggest them is they're well aware of the problems with the V6-24 gearbox and it sounds like you've got the same problem.

Basically, the torque convertor splines strip, leaving no drive to the gearbox. The problem is that when the splines 'let go', they often damage the input shaft too, but the damage isn't immediately obvious - so a lot of people just chuck in a new convertor - which puts you at risk of the same problem again.

Search to JPAT in google uk, and then ask them for an approved repairer.

so would the fto box work with a VR4 ecu and linkage ?

The linkage should work and chances are the wiring will be the same but you would probably need the FTO Gearbox ECU, but its FWD so why would you want to unless it was going into a normal galant?

May take a bit of tweaking but nothing too difficult, anyone got the pinouts for the VR4 gearbox ECU, I bet they are the same as the FTO ECU in which case you would just need the wiring loom and use the FTO Gearbox ECU.
