When I spoke to them the other day they mentioned to me that their FTO was for sale. This is a very unique FTO with a 6A13 N/A engine which has DOHC, and not SOHC like every other 6A13 N/A out there.

I was kind of tempted to pick it up, but it has a 4 speed tip box in it, I told them if they wanted to throw a W5M51 in there with a stock VR-4 clutch I'd take it, but they didn't seem so keen on that!

Someone here with an ST or STR could probably buy it and swap their motor over and resell it.

Interesting.

So, its not a DOHC 6A12 but a DOHC 6A13?

Whats the difference? Size?

in 1996 mitsi in japan made 3 diamante's with 6a13 dohc engines. They decided to drop that idea, and go with a 6G7x family engine instead that was 2.5L. Kempy's bought the 3 engines, I think one of the FTO guys in the club ended up with one of them, and another one of them is at kempy's at the moment.

FTO's were made with 6A12 2.0l DOHC Mivec engines and 8G's were made with 6A13 2.5l SOHC engines, so this car is very unique. It doesn't have mivec but obviously a 6A13 2.5l DOHC FTO would be fairly quick :)

I think it basically a 6A13TT with the turbos removed, if i remember the thread from a few months ago. Any ideas what its power / torque is like copmpared to a 6A13?

Thats basically it, but of course it will have a unique cam grind and a higher compression ratio (but don't ask me what it is)

I have no idea about power output either, it depends how aggresive the cam grind was and if mitsi intended it to be a torquey engine down low, or a peaky high power engine like a 6A12 mivec. My guess is that it would be a nice engine, and it is a real pity mitsi didn't make them.

True facelift Legnums (ie not your's Paul, but Jap market ones with the new rear glass and 4wd) were never made with the 6A13 engine, you either had the 2.4 4 cylinder GDI or the 6A13TT in them. I think Mitsi should have thrown in a 6A13 DOHC into facelift legnums.

Something like 160kw (6000rpm) and 250nm (4000rpm) torque would be a nice upgrade from the 128kw (5500rpm), 230nm (4500rpm) torque that tha 6A13 SOHC produces and would be much more driveable in a heavy car than the 147kw (7500rpm), 200nm (6000rpm) that the 6A12 Mivec makes. Couple that with 4wd and a 6 speed manual or a 5 speed tiptronic, and you've got the ideal car :)

I have a set of cams out of one of these engines, and had them reground. If I were over there I would buy it. How much are they asking for it?

no idea...I didn't even ask, but I would consider it with a manual box :) I'll go there tomorrow and ask again :)

Hi guys
I worked at kempys as the manager for 6 years up until xmas 2005. during that time i built my company car which was, you guessed it, the FTO GR version K.
The History:
Several pre production test Diamantes were built with the 6A13 DOHC n/a engine and crashed into walls and stuff then sent to the scrap yard where we managed to get the remaining pieces and bring them back to NZ.
I always liked the FTO from my work with the FTO owner club from the early days and when we brought the FTO into NZ as an untidy bog standard GR model and it became my drive car. From then on it had any nice bits that came in on a wreck added to it.
I began thinking about upping the power without being to silly and considered the 6A13 SOHC, until Val (the engine guy at kempys) remembered the 6A13's stored up the back of the warehouse and we settled on that.
I took both of us one saturday to swap over. The car still runs the 6A12 ECU, AFM & 4 speed tippy trans. The 6A13 has slightly bigger injectors which resulted in it running rich, so we swapped the 6A12 injectors back into it and it ran schweet. Later added RPW headers but never got round to the adjustable fuel pressure reg.
The Power:
The 6A13 not only has 500cc more, but the intake is freakin huge compared to the 6A12. Result? huge power and torque! evryone that has been driver or passenger has been impressed. Never got around to dyno'ing it so cant give you any figures.
More details: http://www.kempys.co.nz/ftovk.htm
feel free to ask questions if you are interested.
PS i think the price is around $6,000

Interesting info Peetee, I think we had figured out most of that over time anyway, why did you build it with the 4 speed tip box? I would have thought the first thing to do would be to replace it with a 5 speed manual.

I'll offer them $6k - if they throw in a manual box :)

Hi Pete, thought you would show up to talk about this one ;) Its got tow bar, could be ideal for towing my fto :D

Pitty it would cost too much to import.

the car was standard with the 4 speed tippy box. The reason for leaving it was that the FTO manual box is quite scarce and worth quite a bit of money, so we couldnt justify taking one out of stock to put in the car.
Also, I was driving an hour to and from work in rush hour, so the auto made that easier

You couldn't get a vr-4 manual box in there? at least that would stand up to a lot of abuse with the N/A motor in there :)

I had put about 60,000km on it since the transplant and the tiptronic didnt miss a beat during that time. If i had kept it and stayed interested in finishing it i would have put the manual trans i have sitting in the garage in it.

FYI The towbar is from a C62A Lancer (89-92) and bolted straight onto the car (needed holes drilled in the rear rails but fits onto the car perfect

So do you still have the manual transmission at your place? hmmm

how much will you sell it for, and do you have the whole setup for conversion including linkages, pedals, etc etc?

I could sell the box for $500. All i have is the box, no cables or anything else
