Hi

My 2001 Galant 2.0 has disc brakes al round and has developed a squeal, not when the brakes are applied but when they aren't. When I depress the brake pedal the squeal stops, even when i just touch the pedal lightly. This indicates to me that the brake is constantly in contact with one of the discs and I expect that this is bad, undue wear, heat, etc.

What can I do about it? I've never serviced brakes before.

Cheers

Take the pads out, put a bit of copper grease on the backs of the pads and any pins/sliders. Take care not to get grease on the friction material of the pad or on the braking area of the disc. Re-assemble.

I would guess that you analysis of the situation is good, so taking it apart and putting it back together also means that you will notice how much is left on the pads, excessive scoring on the disc, heat cracks in the pads etc.
