View Full Version : Is the 2.5 v6 auto box the same as the vr4?
eh up,
really stupid question , and probably a stupid answer. Is the gearbox the same in a 5 speed 1998 2.5 v6 auto galant as it is in a 1998 vr4?
couldn't find a answer by searching, so thought someone could tell me quickly this way.
cheers,
Martin

I didn't realise there was a 5 speed put into v6's, I thought they were all 4 speeds.

Strictly speaking it is 5-speed.
4 forward and one reverse.

GLS, GDI and V6 (including Sport, tiptronic, non-tiptronic, etc) gearbox is the F4A42. The VR4 gearbox is the W5A51.
Functionally there is no real difference between tip and non-tip boxes because you can limit the non-tip box selection range through the gear holds and use as a pseudo-tip if you wish.

Yeah I thought they were just 4 speeds :)
Facelift JDM spec cars often came with 5 speed tip boxes, which is why I thought it might be a 5 speed.
so was it not such a stupid question?

well yes it is because you should be buying a VR-4 anyway, and not a V6 :)
Oh there's no doubt that i am!! but it needs a new 'box, and i'm trying to find one (richy rich's)

Would the F4A42 fit onto a pre-facelift VR4 in place of the W5A51?

No. The F4 is a FWD box, not a 4WD, and the lack of a 5th cog would probably send the gearbox ECU into 'Timmy' mode....:inquisiti

OK so there is a third type of box - our ST is 4x4, 4 speed auto with tiptronic.

Kieran, do you know the part numbers on the facelift 2.4 cylinder GDI boxes? They made 4 models of them, auto and manual with fwd and 4wd versions of each.
