Hi,
it seems I may be visiting NZ in mid Jan for a tour of the islands for 4 weeks - fingers crossed - and was wondering what would be the best vehicle to do the job (as I dont fancy an RV!) , rather have a 4x4 and a tent :) Any suggestions?! Dont suppose I can borrow a Legnum for the month? What would you kiwi members suggest?

Actually, if I like the place too much I may not want to fly back! Then I'd miss my VR4.... dilemma...

Chris.

depends? is it just you coming over? or are you and few mates coming over?

RV is cheaper if you have a few people. just you? hmmm prolly something like a ute or as you say 4x4.

My brother and me, just shopping around for cheapest air tickets - price seems to tail off in mid Jan - presumably when the ex-pat kiwis have returned to their london jobs after xmas/new year! Well unless there's a VR4 going looks like a 4x4. Thanks.

Plenty of cheaper options than 4x4 and unless you're going serious offroad you don't need it. Any reaonable 2 litre Mitsi/Toymota/Mazda or what ever will easily get you round el cheapo. Just avoid Holdens and Fords, Aussie scrap metal. 4x4 to rent is EXPENSIVE, if you want big comfort get a Mitsi Diamante, 3.0 or 3.5 litre, 180 kw or there abouts, big boot, nice drive.

You're right - 4x4 is uber expensive - was beginning to think it was cheaper to buy an old car for the month and sell it again at the end of the trip! Even bradc's offer might work out cheaper. :deal2: Obviously its an opportunity to mug the tourist without getting your hands dirty /pan Thanks for the advice Xeroid, shall look into it - don't know the Diamante.

Your biggest problem is that you're landing in high season, our summer so rentals will be expensive but if you're doing a long term hire then the rates improve.
Check pricing out on the net, search car rentals, NZ and have a squizz at whats available, make enquiries online, only you know what you want. Email is free remember, ask them what deals they have.
If you're doing both islands in that time ( Thats a LOT of driving !! ) most rental crowds will have you drop one car off at Wellington, catch the ferry across and pick up another car on the other side. Cheaper for you as well.
How far are you expecting to travel ?

Trying to do highlights of both islands so yes, lot of driving! I guess cheaper to drop /pick up vehicles in Wellington, so maybe splitting the rental is a better idea... if its cheaper.

No, you don't split the rental, you rent a car but you swap cars when you cross the strait. That way you get long rent best deal from whomever you get it off. Check it out with a few companies. It saves car ferry cost and makes it easier for the rental company to keep cars where they need them.

If I hadn't sold the Cyborg Hatch you probably could have borrowed that, 1600 DOHC with 2.5" pipe and 205/40/16's and fwd. Would have been fun for you, it's been clocked at 175 kph.

when I used to holiday here in NZ I used to go thru Maui car rentals. they are by far the cheapest for newer type cars.

Chris,

when the ex and I went to NZ we hired a camper van, and invented a new sport called "extreme-campervaning" i really need to put that video together.

We picked it up in CH, and headed south, and found a place called Barrys bay :speechles - then headed to the west coast, up north to catch the ferry to the north island. all done in 10 days, wish i had more time there it was a total rush really, couldnt really enjoy anywhere for any great length of time.

However, the practical side of having a campervan was stopping somewhere, taking the campervan down and onto a beach, and sitting there eating the eggs and bacon we just made..

Yeah, you can certainly save $ on accom when you go campervan, trouble is they haven't got 4wd, AYC or turbs and they're a slow as.

In Auckland too no doubt. The *****r ratio in our georgeous comercial hub is on par with anywhere else in the world. (And I lived in London for 2 years)

You'll find some genuine overly nice hobbits down south tho. I've lived in NZ most of my life and even I noticed that last time I went. You might just have to put up with Southland farmers asking you how the England Rugby team is going nowdays. (they know very well how they are going).

Just don't say *cough*2003*cough*1999*cough*1995*cough*1991*cough *. It's like asking a German about WW2.

Chris, I'd go for a Maui if you've got the budget. At least you won't have to worry about finding motels. Just drive safe in the knowledge that you can stop whereever you want, whenever you want outside cities. Other than that, go for a compact. Getting a 4WD and Accomodation will be a deadset ransom. And you'll be here in Summer so little snow to worry about. And standard insurance doesn't cover you off road either. I doubt any rental co will offer off-road cover if you're planing to root the suspension on a RAV4 or Pajero.

I wasn't lying either. They pop mean smokies. Ours did anyway.

Can't offer you my VR4 sorry, but can offer you and your bro a beer if you're in AKL. Let me know.

Aaron
