OMG! That's horrendous. I remember reading once about some poor woman who'd been dead in her flat for an estimated 3-4 months before anyone noticed. It's really sad that people can be so isolated that no-one notices if they disappear for that length of time.

It's like Dan Wilson said...

If you've ever had this, like, teenage style.... revenge fantasy of moving far, far away cos then the people who don't appreciate you will... totally realise what they're missing and how great you were and it's too bad you're gone and all that. Imagine you like put your hand in a bucket of water, ok? And take it out real fast, is there a hand-sized gap in the water? Like, only for a second. Maybe.

And you have to move away to somewhere dangerous, so that people will worry about you continually. Cos if you go to San Francisco or Seattle it's like... you're safe, you're fine.... Dan who?

It was the subject of a recent set of Dilbert (http://www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/archive/dilbert-20061106.html) cartoons

Just remember this was in New York. These people have a reputation for looking the other way and walking away when there is a street mugging in progress. Still, even for New York, it just doesn't seem right. Quite sad.

I knew I was getting old when I paused briefly to ponder how long I could lay dead in my flat before anyone came to look for me?
