Hiya,

Does the Manual in the members area detail how to help rebuild the 2.5 V6 gearbox (bearings have gone). I have the CD manual from eBay but to to be fair it doesn't help on the gearbox internals!

I removed the gearbox from the car today but splitting the thing is proving tricky. Hopefully it is not that big a deal to get some new bearings pressed in.

Splitting what exactly?

We have the workshop manual in the members area. (prolly the same as what you have.)

Splitting the gearbox, I am trying to get the bellhousing away from the mains of the box so I can get to the internals and replace the bearings. Its not budging by more than 5mm though. Enough to stream oil down the driveway though!

I surely cant be the first person to have a go at his own box though!

Ok, to put a bit more detail. I have 2.5 V6 1997 Manual. The bearings have gone and led to oil getting into the bellhousing and onto the clutch. I have removed the gearbox (there are some pesky bots around there) and the gearbox has had all ancillaries removed from it (selector mechanism, clutch cylinder, etc. All bolts have been removed including drain, inspection bolts, the rear cover plate, the rear gear (apart from one which is just a plug - think it may be a take-off point if manuals ever came with gear oil coolers).

However trying to remove the bell housing from the main internals of the gearbox is proving tricky. I can get a 5mm gap, but no more and I'm not sure how much to force. The final gear locations for the driveshafts seem to be loose enough. Personally it seems to be hanging on the final bellhousing seal. but I am not sure as to whether the gears need to be in reverse/special setting to allow the bellhousing to slide off.

Alternatively it might be the rear bearing beraking up enough so that it has welded to the main shaft or similar and is refusing to let go.

Ques - should the bellhousing in normal circumstances slide off the main shaft leaving the bellhousing seal as a press fit replacement? (id take a picture but forgot the camera and its back at my mothers house.......another one of my vehicles taking up her driveway!!

heres a good pic (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showpost.php?p=95500&postcount=27) - taken from the thread (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11086) where i replaced my clutch.

This pic (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showpost.php?p=95680&postcount=38) shows the plate that holds the flywheel on. which is the "front" of what you see when looking through the inspection hole.

That has got to be a VR4 gearbox then, looks completely different from the V6-24 gearbox, or maybe its just me! Times up for me now, going to have to get some pictures at the weekend!! Have a good one! Jason
