May not be convenient for you Rich. But I have used these guys a couple of times to rebuild gearboxs and they have always done an excellent job ... plus you get a 12,000 mile / 1 year warranty.

http://www.3d-transmissions.co.uk/

They weren't cheap though but mind you both times I used them they had to remove and refit the gearbox as well.

I've used these people a couple of times. Not far from me.

www.gearchange.co.uk
Tel 01278-722359

a) Galant V6-24 removed box replaced bearing and seals and refitted - £350
b) Golf MK2 as above but £340.

Local Mitsi dealer uses them as do most local garages.
Also offer 12 months warranty.

Rich, any compitent mechanic should be able to do it, gearboxes are not that complicated, strip it yourself and see what you think.

Hi
Maybe to far from you, they are based in Colchester, Essex.
These guys repaired my Manual gearbox when I lost 3rd gear. Cost me £400. (part was about £40)

Hope you get the box sorted.

Cheers
Mike

So what exactly were the differences between the pre and post 2000 boxes then? Did they strengthen the later ones or did they drop a bollock???

first pic the cap that need taking out.
second pic the clip that needs expanding to get the case off not very good pic but if you look hard you can just see it. a pair of long nose pliers will do it
third pic the bearing that is totally forked
