What a stupid car !! /Grrr /Grrr

elec leather seats, but you have to open the door to use them or you get your fingers trapped !! & thats only up and down. to go back & forward, it's still a manual leaver under the front ?? WTF ?? /pan /pan
touch of a button, & the center console closes.................. & traps anything in it !! handbrake that wont let you use it unless your on a really steep hill ??
& It's probably the noisiest diesel I've driven !!
on the plus side though.......... It's the 'avant guarde' model [ top of the range ] & does have some cool tricks !! :afro: like reverse parking sensors... that appear only in the rear view mirror.......................... cool !

my boss had a c class (1.8 supercharged) as a loan car while his being repaired , well he came back raving about it "its got loads of power & it handles well",well he is only 24 , so i blagged the keys and went for a spin , well what a bag o' sh1te , power ? mine has more go in the starter motor than that has , the traction control won't turn off fully ,well it does but as soon as you start to launch it sideways it kicks back in /pan it understeers like a barge , the "tiptronic"gears were shocking , even in sport? mode they took ages to change , and the lever went left - right WTF !! mind you the cabin was nice , all polished black wood efect plastic and chrome bits with little digital displays every where

Interesting the comments about the Merc.... You see, someone I've been in a W124 (that's the old 1980-something to 1995ish) E-Class and that felt like it could take a direct hit from a trident missile and at worst miss on a cylinder for a coupe of seconds whilst the nuclear fallout interfered with the ECU - after which all would be normal. It was however a proper old skool honky-blonk affair. Now, someone I used to work with had a new Merc C200K. Nice, and lots of toys and gadgets. Form had taken priority over function.... However, things like the thickness of the bodywork, the way the doors closed, the design of the hinges and weatherstrips..... It just felt like it'd conk out long before the "traditional" Mercs would.

Kieran, I've heard that a lot about mercs recently, that they don't feel very solid or good quality at all.

Yeah, I must say I'd agree with that.... An oft-used phrase over here was 'Hewn from a slab of Granite' when speaking of Mercedes build quality and finish. I'm no longer sure that's the case...

It isn't.

I sat in a W220 S-class at the london motorshow a few years ago... there were dodgy bits of plastic trim, unfinished edges of leather, and it did not feel as solid as my dad's E38 7-series. The undisputed king of build, however, has got to be Audi.

Say what you really think, Derek! Come on, don't hold back! :speechles /pan

I know all that.... But explain to me why, let's say a contemporary Audi incorporates all these features yet still manages to have a level of fit and finish like Mercs of old? I know we're getting stonger, lighter, faster and all that, but I do believe that the modern Mercedes is much more of a 'disposable' car and is much less over-engineered for it's time than previously.

apart from the high qaulity of the digital displays (very crisp and clear) i would go as far as to say its probably no better built or more comfortable than a top spec mundano / passat/vectra/laguna etc

My Mum's owned an SLK 230K for the last 3 years, and it's a right bag of w@nk. nothing feels right, at ll. It's been in for some leaky roof work a few time aswell, and she's had several other models as courtesy cars, and they were absolute sh!te. I think what paul says above is about right, they are no better than Mundanes and the like these days.

modern mercs are built to a controlled budget not controlled engineering standards that they used to be, thats what happens when the bean counters take control.... They are as PSB says "disposable" unlike the mercs of old which were built to last.

People buy them for the badge these days, like beemers and audis they are seen a Prestige, when in fact most models from these manufacturers are no better than the main stream manufacturers in terms of build and engineering quality.
