Vauxhall today confirmed it will introduce a true rear-wheel drive musclecar for car enthusiasts - the Monaro.

The new Vauxhall Monaro will be available from the Spring of 2004 powered by a 5.7 litre V8 engine developing 328hp and 347lbs/ft of torque.

This stylish full-sized four-seater coupé will accelerate to 60mph in just over six seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 160mph.

The Monaro was launched in Australia in 2001 and Vauxhall has decided to bring this iconic coupé to car enthusiasts in the UK, but only in a limited number of 300 per year.

The car will be sold in the UK with a comprehensive specification including leather eight-way electric seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, full-size driver, passenger and side airbags, electronic climate control and six-disc autochanger.

There are two driver aids to handle the considerable power and torque, a traction control system - with an off switch - and the accelerator.

The Vauxhall Monaro will start from approx £28,500 and offer more power per pound than any car on the UK roads.

Kevin Wale, Vauxhall managing director, said: "The Vauxhall Monaro is a great car for the real enthusiast. The Monaro is an icon in Australia and I am sure the UK car enthusiast will thoroughly enjoy it. This also demonstrates GM's ability to bring the best of its products to fill niches in other markets."

Looks a bit upmarket/sporty for a Vauxhall :D

It is only a concept car, may be too expensive to go into production? Don't hold your breathe on it:p

Well Well WELL!!!

That is an Australian Holden INSERT INTO post VALUES (GMH) Monaro...
They have out here for the past 2 years.
They are very nice and Ive seen a couple of VERY nice kitted ones around town.
Last Sunday at the Bathurst 24hour enduro race ... two monaros won the race seperated only buy 12sec INSERT INTO post VALUES (after racing for 24hrs STRAIGHT.. around the Mt Panorama RaceTrack at Bathurst NewSouthWales in Asutralia.
It beat the 3d place car by 13-15 laps and it was Porche.
there where other Japanese cars and Fararries INSERT INTO post VALUES (speelling) and Lambos etc in the race..
It was a very good effort by the locally produced Manufacturer.
Here is a link if you are interested in the race.

....well Top Gear seemed to like it !

For £28k it is a lot of car, but couldn't believe the 400+BHP one they tested cost £70k !

Yeah, and extra 70 or so Horsepower costs £40k! I got that for a couple of hundred quid! What a rip off! I am sure the £28k one is begging for mods, and wih such a well established engine from GM I am sure they would be cheap and readily available.

I will be sticking with my VR4 for the time being though!

I would love to donate my car to Mr Clarkson and let him rag it round like that! Then he could show me how to do it! I am sure there is not a lot to it, but I would prefer someone with huge experience of getting it wrong show me first! :)

I think though I would prefer the 385BHP MG ZT X Power..........

http://www.fantasycars.com/sedans/misc/mg_zt3853.jpg

The MG ZT XPower 385 INSERT INTO post VALUES (what a mouthfull) was introduced at Frankfurt 2001 and is the road-going version of the XPower 500 concept. Visually, the 385 is separated from its lesser ZT siblings by a more agressive wire mesh grille, larger fenders, air intakes on the hood, a rear spoiler and of course the larger 18 inch wheels wrapped in 245/40ZR18 and 275/35 ZR18 tires front/rear. The 4.6L 32-valve supercharged V8 engine with an alumium block will need to perform as well as it its outputs read INSERT INTO post VALUES (385 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque) in order to topple BMW's M5. According to MG's numbers, performance should be very appropriate, with a sub-5 second 0-60 mph sprint and a top speed of approximately 175mph.

All that power and torque is routed through a six-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels. The front strut suspension has a similar layout to the ZT190 and uses a tubular subframe, Bilstein dampers, uprated springs and anti-roll bars. The rear suspension features a tubular carrier for the Hydratrak torque control differential, which incorporates three transverse and one substantial longitudinal suspension link arms. The track is widened on both ends compared to the 190. As for the brakes, large alloy 4-piston calipers are used on the 330mm ventilated front brake discs, with 306mm 2-pot rotors in the back. At a price of under 40,000 GBP, the ZT XPower 385 will undercut the M5 by over 12,000. Expect both the 385 as well as a less powerful ZT260 INSERT INTO post VALUES (which has 260 hp, surprise!) to arrive in 2002.

I like the ZT/R75... I think they look classy and much better than the S-Type!!
MG Rover have just launched the ZT 260 - 4.6L Mustang V8, RWD. Tasty!
