Firstly, Wodj, just don't even think about it!!!/pan /pan

But to get back on track, I personally prefer the open face kind as the full face, I found too restrictive for car use. Never ridden bikes so no influence from these for me.

Deffo open face! - otherwise you start steaming up, and you sound like darth vader for the duration of the session.

Scott would not recommend a full face at all unless you will also use it on a m'bike . 15 or 20 mins on the track is enuf to make you sweat like you've been down the gym for an hour . I walked into a local motor bike shop and said , i want the cheapest open faced helmet , how much 40 quid and it works great . At the end of the day you have an airbag to protect you face

I think ill ask about that open face number again then.

OMP open face proper safe jobby, all the right FIA stickers apart from the fire reg's one, but your kinda buggered in a fire anyway to worry about your noggin.

Fits well, very comfortable and it matches my gloves :p

Only said it to provoke a response from you Heath /lol if you remember rightly my golf gloves that I wore at Japfest were white.

It's more a case of sweaty b@stard hands than being a good driver unfortunately :pimp2:

I know - bet you're looking forward to finally getting the Pug out on track /rally

Shame we won't see each other in our forth coming trackdays /toycar

There is a good reason for having a full face helmet - photographers tend to catch your ugly mug in the car /pan

Have fun and hope your preps go well :2thumbsup

Sorry to be a killjoy but some trackday organisers will demand that your crash helmet has the up-to-date FIA stickers

Does not have to conform to the additional fireproof stds but IIRC correctly many if not all motorcycle helmets do not conform to the FIA stds

To avoid a purchase that may be rejected by the trackday organiser make certain that you check what is required and get the right helmet

It does not have to be expensive - as prev said an OMP can be obtained for decent price - just get the right spec to avoid a wasted purchase

And make certain that you buy NEW - never 'hardly used' from a friend or any other source

Std required at most if not all UK tracks will be BS6658/85 Type A, BS6658/85 Type A/FR

They may allow Snell SA 95, Snell SA2000, SFI Foundation 31.1, or SFI Foundation 31.2.

But the European E22 standard may not be accepted.

FR - Fire Resistant/Retardant is not essential but is a quality of even more expensive crash helmets that meet the required std

I think im ok, stuart has used one of these before....

Nutter_John
10-01-2007, 10:44 AM
And in the track days i have done last year they never asked to see the helmet , just the fact i had one was enough

chris g

Depends who organised the trackday so you pays your money..........

Axeboy
10-01-2007, 10:58 AM
Yeah, see what you are saying... i had wondered what kind of certification they needed.

But seems these pass the Japfest test.. woohoo!

HJM

Although it is possible, it is unlikely you will get asked to 'qualify' your crash helmet at a British trackday.

I've done a fair few trackdays in the last 2 years and with several organisations and they only insist you have and wear one.

What would Chris know he's a bit of a track novice so I hear (waits for yorkshireman abuse and a pint in the Motorsport /Handbag) - roll on Easter /rally

Well compared to your UK activities now H, I have fallen way behind in UK track time.....

...but then I have never been that keen to spend money in the UK preferring to feed my addiction and also visit other euro tracks...

...so although I read of UK trackday organisers requiring helmet stds as above, not many people, as you mentioned, say they have been checked...

...but who wants to spend good money on a helmet and then get checked and have your enjoyment limited by having to borrow or rent another helmet

And a helmet to required std is only £20-30 more AND you know it does meet the FIA std which isnt there to protect your tyres!

WildCards

...FIA std which isnt there to protect your tyres!

No, they do a good job of keeping your noggin warm though, specially if it doesn't meet the fire reg's

Sorry to say this, omitted from other posts, but best way to buy a 'good' helmet is to go to the shop...

....and then if it gets stuck on your head, there is someone there to pull it off, eventually!

chris g
15-01-2007, 09:59 PM
And the other 'omitted' point was, in the shop you can check which helmets fit comfortably and properly, which ensures you do not pay to get a helmet that does not fit and then have to sort return/refund/another helmet
